Should I be seeing 'auto incrementation' of the order number?

I thought at one time the order number 'auto incremented', but in todays 
work I'm doing with ripping out OE.pm to make it stand alone and driven
from a externally parsed text file, I am not seeing auto-increment 
behavior in the web pages.

So:  Was I on the cheap crack (becuase I hadn't got billing out and therefore
can get the good stuff :-)  or have I missed some sort of flag that allows
the next logical ordernum to be placed on the web page?

For the code I'm writing, its a non-problem, but my memory says that the web
page used to auto-increment, and I seek clarity on this.
