Dear Ralph,
I think the two examples that you mentioned can be solved as follows,
Example 1:
a) Treat the 4 HDs as normal purchase and book them into inventory.
b) Transfer 1 HD into asset as thus,
Dr Asset (cost of 1 HD)
Cr Inventory (cost of 1 HD)
Example 2:
Your customer's bill would appear as,
Number Description Qty Price
part1 Harddisk 1 $999
part2 Support Service 1 $99.9
ie, separate what you want to charge your customer into two or more items.
