It actually does make sense for some of the reporting features and  
the workaround is easy enough, just go into the customer properties  
and set the start date as far back as you need.

Workaround is to enter all new customers per 1/1 of running year, and  
have
first invoice date as start of actual relationship. However, the  
business
logic seems fuzzy at least here..
