I also used it for a time. I used it to preprocess web pages before loading them to the server. I really liked it and have not seen anything better, but I would not use it for mission critical work since I do not trust it to work with new technologies. If I used it I feel I would need to commit to supporting it myself, and there are other tools, that are not as good, but can do the job, and are supported. -EdK Ed Keith e_...@ya... Hi Believe it or not i'm putting my last Spyce site out to pasture by the end of next? month. It helped my client (a regulator) analyze and identify abnormal stock trading behaviour for small stock markets in the Caribbean. Its been in production since 2007?. I'm Migrating the system to Django and making more use of the power of pandas for time series and other statistical analysis. BTW if you liked spyce then you should probably take a look at http://aspen.io. In some ways it is very similar to spyce you can mix python and template code on the same page. It is getting some notice as it is framework that powers http://gittip.com the popular micro donations site. Recently, I used aspen when I participated in the gittip sprint at pycon2013. Although I am a bit of a Django chauvinist I had to admit it was really pleasant to use such a lightweight framework over a heavyweight like Django (It really reminded me of why i liked spyce) I'm going to teach some youngsters (13/14 age range) python next month and i'm definitely going to use http://aspen.io Here's a post by the aspen author explaing some of the ideas behind the framework http://whit537.org/2013/03/why-aspen.html Regards Chris PS: I'm not sure if spyce is compatible with python2.7? I did have it in production for a short time, serving web pages with dynamic content on the SQLalchemy, but I stood it down about four years ago, however, it did a great job of supporting some web sites for quizzes and a few shopping sites, and served their purposes fairly well. ________________________________ From: John Graber <dev...@gm...> To: spy...@li... Rodney -- If you are just starting out with Spyce, be aware that it hasn't seen any development in several years. It was a great project, but it didn't gain a large user base. I've been looking for a Spyce replacement for years, and recently I've finally found Mako. If you connect it to Apache, it does much of what Spyce did -- not everything, but quite a bit. The Mako project has a good following and a strong developer base. All by itself, it enables PHP-style/Spyce-style code in web pages. For larger projects, I partner Mako with Django. Mako makes for a great front end, Django is a great back end. You can get my Apache connector here: http://warp.byu.edu/site/content/813 -- Conan C. Hello;
I am trying to run the Spyce dev server on my local WinVista machine.
I get this error:
---
C:\Spyce>spyceCmd.py -l
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "C:\Spyce\spyceCmd.py", line 12, in <module>
import spyce, spyceException, spyceUtil, spyceCompile, spycePreload
File "C:\Spyce\spyce.py", line 549
def _startModule(self, name, file=None, as=None, force=0):
^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
----
The caret would be under the attribute name 'as' if it were in a
fixed-width font.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I love Python am excited to
see Spyce in action on my computer.

For those encountering the following: syntax: please specify a spyce file to process Use -h option for help. issue, the fix is explained at: http://www.neotitans.com/resources/python/spyce-tips-and-techniques.html In a nutshell, change the following line in spyceCGI.py: try: path = findScriptFile(environ['PATH_TRANSLATED']) to try: path = findScriptFile(environ['SCRIPT_FILENAME']) Even unupdated for a couple of years(?), Spyce is *still* the simplest and easiest way of getting Python server pages functionality. Does anyone really know of a better alternative? For those having problems with Python 2.6, e.g. "as" and "with" being used as keywords, the instances of "as" and "with" variables in the following files need to be changed: spyce-2.1/spyce.py spyce-2.1/tags/form.py then all should be working again. ======================== http://www.neotitans.com Web and IT Consulting |

Under Apache mod_fastcgid + Spyce, the problem also does not exist, so this looks like an bug that has to do with interaction between lighttpd fastcgi support and fcgi.py... |

I noticed a problem when running spyceCGI under
lighttpd fastcgi (across all versions including the
latest).
I confirmed that no such issue exists with php fastcgi
under the same setup.
showgetvar.spy
==============
<html>
<body><pre>
<%\
print request.getpost1("emailbody")
%>
</pre></body>
</html>
when called as:
showgetvar.spy?emailbody=123%0d%0a456
is fine, but two \r\n's in a row:
showgetvar.spy?emailbody=123%0d%0a%0d%0a456
seems to screw up the output of formprocess.spy, this is what comes out:
456
</pre></body>
</html>
Only the last part of the get variable gets printed
and everything before the Spyce chunk disappears.

Jonathan Ellis mentioned creating a spyceRequest subclass for WSGI on his blog before at: http://spyced.blogspot.com/2006/11/translating-spyce-form-tags.html Any chance we'll see this? I've been looking at Mako as a possible Spyce replacement. The problem with Mako is that it is merely a templating language and you have to pair it with a server and a whole bunch of other crap/rigmarole. Frankly I am SICK-TO-DEATH of having to figure out all the so-called solutions out there (I've looked at: Pylons, Paste, Cherry.py, Turbogears, Spawning, Django, Werkzeug, web2py, web.py, Bottle, GAE, WebStack, and god knows half a dozen more stuff) which are all an order of magnitude more complicated than Spyce. Good grief, I just want to set up a bunch of configuration lines with Apache and be able to just do: <% print "yo" %> and be done with it. Now *THAT* is Pythonic. We need a mod_wsgi version because mod_python is getting long in the tooth. You can still do fcgi (with lighttpd only I think, Apache doesn't work) and proxied (load-balanced?) standalone server, but I would really prefer a mod_xxxx (mod_wsgi) solution which seems to have a long life ahead of it. |

This will be horribly noob stuff, but I'm finding the overview or `about' at http://www.sphinxsearch.com/about.html Does not explain much that I understand. I see the phrase `full text search' but then it talks about connecting to sql data bases. Its not clear if this search engine can be made to search regular data. Although it does mention html as an acceptable data format.. and something about html_strip somewhere deep in the manual. I don't see any mention of how the indexer is aimed at a set of data.. like maybe a web site or whatever. I've strayed into the actual manual above but since I have... I hoped that the `Quich sphinx leaning tour' would clarify how one controls the indexer... but I don't see it if its there. example from http://www.sphinxsearch.com/docs/current.html#quick-tour: Run the indexer to create full-text index from your data: $ cd /usr/local/sphinx/etc $ /usr/local/sphinx/bin/indexer What is the indexer indexing... ... Is it all controlled from the conf file? The example conf doesn't appear to have much to say about it: Unless this is it: index test1 { source = src1 path = /var/lib/data/test1 docinfo = extern charset_type = sbcs } And user is expected to change /var/lib/data/test1 to point to something else? I'm sure this all sounds really stupid but none of The About, Features or cursory examination of the manual, make it clear what this critter does at a basic level. Can it be made to index and provide detailed search capability of a set of web pages? |

Maybe you need to run as administrator to use os.tmpfile() on Vista? Hi:
I have been trying to get Spyce running in Windows Vista Home. I get the
following error message in IPython:
In [3]: run spyceCmd.py -l
# Spawning another server (for check_modules_and_restart option)
# Running reloading file monitor (for check_modules_and_restart option)
# Starting Spyce web server. v2.1
# Configuration - C:\Spyce\spyce-2.1\spyceconf.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "C:\Spyce\spyce-2.1\spyceTag.py", line 254, in loadLib
self._server.loadModule(libname, libfrom, rel_file)(libas)
File "C:\Spyce\spyce-2.1\spyce.py", line 273, in loadModule
return loadModuleHelper()
File "C:\Spyce\spyce-2.1\spyce.py", line 241, in loadModuleHelper
f = os.tmpfile()
OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied
I have tried commenting out the temp file lines in the spyceconf file,
resetting permissions on the spyce files and setting these files as
'trusted' in my firewall program including windows defender. The only thing
I haven't tried is commenting out line 241 in the spyce.py file. Does anyone
have any advice? Thanks.
Regards,
Steve
