Hi *, On Friday, a bank in the City of London pointed to me that they would not recommend the use of Spring Rich Client due to a lack of activity. I'd say that there is still some activity but it is true that the last release is nearly 14m old... I therefore encourage you to consider a release soon... and why not 1.0 or close to 1.0; a version 0.3 does not reflect the maturity of this framework. Thanks! All,
I think we need to bring back some life in the project. I don't want this
project to die. It has a lot of potential, and is being successfully used.
I'm willing to invest more time into the framework, but we're missing two
things:
1. a roadmap
2. leadership
first thing we must do is create a roadmap
end of year: 1.0RC1 (fix all urgent bugs in jira, no extra
functionality)
january: 1.0: final 1.0 release
....
There are about 35 bugs in jira that are open/unresolved/reopened. Some of
them are enhancement requests, some won't be implemented, so I think the
final count is down to 25 or so.
It should be possible to clear them all out by the end of the year, and have
a stable release ready.
second thing: about the leadership: Jan, can you resume the rol of project
lead, or do we choose/assign a new project lead?
what do you guys think?
regards,
Peter

I know I haven't been very active lately. I find that time is getting more sparse while the tasks requiring my attention increased. We're still using RCP but as most people we're mostly extending it. As for the project lead role, I'm gonna make an effort freeing up time for RCP but I can't predict how it will end up. If there are others which can dedicate the necessary time and effort towards the project, I'll have no problem passing on the torch to shed some new light. Some weeks ago I had a discussion in which it seemed that although RCP has some great points, it lacks an out-of-the-box usage. All components are there, but there's still a lot of plumbing to do when you want to construct a simple database-backed application. We currently are using some interfaces/baseclasses in our firm to facilitate building applications based on the CRUD principle (think of a table with a detail form beneath, list filtering options etc). I guess there will be others using a same approach and it may be an attractive asset to add to RCP. Something we could add to our road-map after a 1.0 release.
