[Springframework-developer] Oddity with Tomcat 5, JMX, and Spring JMX

Hello,

Finally got a chance to play with Spring's new JMX code.  I'm running
inside Tomcat 5.0.27, and wish to bind my MBeans into Tomcat's builtin
MBeanServer.

On deploy of my webapp, KeyNamingStrategy throws a NoSuchMethodError
when it tries to call ObjectName.getInstance(String).  IIR, that was
added to JMX 1.2.

It seems that the version of JMX Tomcat 5 uses (found in
$TOMCAT_HOME/bin/jmx.jar) is older than that.  Tomcat 5 uses mx4j.

mx4j didn't added support for getInstance(String) until 21 months ago:

So, just a heads up to those experimenting... you might experience
issues trying to use Tomcat 5 and JMX from Spring.  It looks like
Tomcat 5 should upgrade it's mx4j library.  In the meantime, I've very
excited to get this working!

Seth,

I have experienced this same error. I am hoping to create a wrapper 
around the JMX implementations so that Spring will work with them. 
Currently only 1.2 is supported.

I think working w/ only 1.2 is pretty fair, since it has been out for
so long. :)

I replaced the jmx.jar in my tomcat install w/ the latest version, and
things started working much better.  Don't know why Tomcat hasn't
upgraded this jar in so long.
