Now that I'm back from my trip I was able to spend a bit of time and add 
a mod to the phpBB install so that registering as a new user on the 
forums requires people to copy a confirmation code that is randomly 
generated as an image on each attempt. Unfortuantely this will make it 
harder for disabled users (with screen readers and the like) to register 
on the system, but as we have some sort of porn spam bot creating new 
users (with porn urls in their profile), there was no real alternative...
