My 2 cents is that an IDE will point this out to you and the change will 
take all of 2 minutes to code.

It would be a bigger deal IMO if you had to change your context 
definitions, because in that case the error might not be found for a 
while (for example, if the bean was lazily initialized).  However, 
Spring's use of PropertyEditors means the change should be transparent 
in terms of XML application context definitions.

Spring Module uses ant + ivy for its build infrastructure and setting
the libraries manual in eclipse easily gets un-synched with the actual
jar used from command line (that's why I've stopped updating the
.classpath file).
The IvyTeam already provides an Eclipe plugin(IvyDE) but it doesn't
handle too well the build path: http://jira.jayasoft.org/browse/IVYDE-8
Obviously it's not an ideal situation but I'm not aware of any nice
workaround...

Lazy initialization on a bean-by-bean basis can for example be used for
switching between alternatives based on some placeholder in a bean
reference. That said, I generally agree that lazy loading is not used that
much in a Spring environment, in particular not in production. And even in
development, the startup time of an application context usually doesn't
really matter... at least not the Spring side of it.

I'm a little new to this. It seems strange to me that you can lazily
initialize on a bean-by-bean basis. Don't you want to lazy load everything
during development (faster turnaround time on the section of code you're
working on) and eagerly load everything in production (consistent
performance for users)?

When using default-lazy-init="true" with the 2.0 M5 release, I find that
neither does my PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer's do its stuff nor does my
ApplicationListener's receive any events as they all did with previous
releases.

Is this expected behavior?

This is an interesting issue... There haven't been any concerns about that
before. We might indeed offer a method to flush that cache, or have some
smart eviction policies based on the kind of object that we introspect. I'll
see what we can do for the upcoming 2.0 RC3.

Now this may be a stupid question - so please tell me if it is.

I was doing some memory profiling of Confluence earlier, and I noticed that
for us CachedIntrospectionResults is holding over 2.5 MB of retained memory.
This is only going to grow as more classes etc are added to the application.

Therefore, I was looking for a way to reduce it's size.

Is it possible to add a flush method to this? What would be the impacts?

that point any cached introspection results there might not be needed
(unless they're used to autowire some other object, or in a factory style
bean).

Therefore would flushing this cache after startup reduce the overall long
term memory usage of the application, with relatively little other impacts?

At worst case, if all objects in the cache were actually used _after_
startup, the cache would be completely populated twice and each object's
property descriptors would be retrieved twice.

At base case, if all objects in the cache were _never_ used after startup,
the cache would take up no memory for most of the application's life (beyond
startup).

Am I nuts? :)

Christian could say for sure but I'm almost positive the preview version of
Web Flow Editor available now only supports SWF PR3.  We've of course had
many releases since then.  :-)

I know the Spring IDE team is starting work back up now that SWF has
stabilized on the road to 1.0 GA, but I don't have the latest status there.
Christian or Torsten would know for sure - you might want to checkout the
Spring IDE forum on forum.springframework.org as well.

[Springframework-developer] Wedge Web Framework Released

Dear Spring community,

I am pleased to announce the first public release of the Wedge web framework.

Wedge is a component centric web framework built on Spring  and Hibernate and it provides a POJO based application development. It makes use of some of the Java 1.5 features, thus it is not compatible with previous versions of JDK.

Wedge has some concepts inspired from Tapestry but with some notable differences. 

Here are some of the features of Wedge:

* Page classes are simple POJO’s with no imposed hierarchy. 

* Page classes are Spring managed beans. Most of the time, Wedge will register these classes as Spring beans behind the scene without any configuration.

* Page classes may be reloaded at runtime without restarting the application even though the class may have changed dramatically (methods or fields were added, renamed, removed…)

* Templates still use special tag attributes like Tapestry pages but Wedge tries to simplify this by introducing defaults and naming conventions. Example:
            <span insert=”ognl:message”>[the message]</span> instead of
           <span wid=”w:insert” value=”ognl:message”>[the message]</span>
           or
            <tr foreach=”ognl: person”>… </tr> instead of
            <tr wid=”w:foreach” source=”ognl: persons” value=”ognl: person”>… </tr>

* Templates may be also reloaded at runtime. Just modify the template and refresh the browser window.

* Wedge is not using runtime reflection to evaluate OGNL expressions. It makes use of runtime code generation for generating a class that renders the output based on the information taken from the page java class and the page template.

* The framework supports defaults and naming conventions. Thus you may create a page at runtime and access it right away without declaring it explicitly.

* Wedge offers basic support for DAO classes in the form of generic DAO interface and a generic implementation. Wedge generic DAO implementation extends Spring DAO support for Hibernate.

* Making use of the new extensible schema configuration in Spring 2.0, wedge provides a more /domain specific language/ for configuring the application.

* It offers a very intuitive and self documented way to configure Hibernate. More details in the framework documentation.

* In an experimental stage, Wedge provides some ORM support by allowing you to declare an application model for Hibernate without writing xml mapping files. This feature makes use of naming conventions and runtime reflection to detect class properties and relationships and based on this information it generates the mapping xml at application startup. More details in documentation and /on demand/ ;-).

* Wedge also provides a very helpful command line tool built on ANT that allows you to easily create a new application and generate pages, spring services or model classes. 

* It also comes with an embedded jetty server and a HSQLDB server (work in progress) with corresponding management commands.

This release is the result of several months of work and many of the ideas grew up from the hints and advices of the Spring team members. That’s why I would like to express my gratitude to those who helped me in developing this framework.

This release should not be considered a final release. Development will continue and more features will be added. Until it will be released in a final form it should not be considered ready for any kind of production environment. 

Community feedback is most wanted and critics are welcomed. Thus, you may share your thoughts on this framework on the Wedge forum.

I agree with this but this responsibility is of the controller showing
the exception. Besides, if the exception resolver is used correctly, any
new exception will always replace the old one. Of course, if the users
navigates to the "error.html" page without having caused an exception ...
What I am more concerned about is the fact that if showing the exception
generates an exception which generates an exception which generates an
exception... you end up in a infinite redirect to the error.html page
There should be a way to intercept this recursive problem. Ideas?

One possible danger of putting exceptions in the session that I see is 
re-displaying 'old' errors. E.g. if for some reason the real exception isn't 
put in the session the error page will pick up on the previous exception 
that's still there. This can lead to very confusing situations.
Ideally the exception in the session should be removed after it has been 
displayed to the user.

Hey guys,

Now this may be a stupid question - so please tell me if it is.

I was doing some memory profiling of Confluence earlier, and I noticed
that for us CachedIntrospectionResults is holding over 2.5 MB of
retained memory. This is only going to grow as more classes etc are
added to the application.

Therefore, I was looking for a way to reduce it's size.

Is it possible to add a flush method to this? What would be the impacts?

add a lot of objects to this cache (as the various beans are created),
after that point any cached introspection results there might not be
needed (unless they're used to autowire some other object, or in a
factory style bean).

Therefore would flushing this cache after startup reduce the overall
long term memory usage of the application, with relatively little
other impacts?

At worst case, if all objects in the cache were actually used _after_
startup, the cache would be completely populated twice and each
object's property descriptors would be retrieved twice.

At base case, if all objects in the cache were _never_ used after
startup, the cache would take up no memory for most of the
application's life (beyond startup).

Am I nuts? :)

created by Ulrik Sandberg & Mattias Arthursson now has a new home as a 
full Spring subproject: Spring-LDAP!

This is a very useful library for accessing LDAP without much of the 
normal boilerplate, as well as doing DAO style operations with LDAP. It 
is similar in some respects to JdbcTemplate, and in fact includes an 
LdapTemplate class.

I have checked in Spring-LDAP as part of spring-projects. It is 
available via SVN from:

but you normally need to check out spring-projects entirely, since it 
will need to build with common-build out of spring-projects:

This code is based off the v1.0.2 LdapTemplate release. I have not 
touched (refactoring aside) any code, but there were some 
logistics/changes involved:
    - refactor 'net.sf.ldaptemplate' base package to 
'org.springframework.ldap'
    - LdapTemplate used common-build, but based of a slightly older 
version. In the meantime, common-build in spring-projects has moved to 
Maven2 directory conventions, so I had to refactor the actual source trees
    - LdapTemplate used to have a static filesytem repo of jars. I have 
made the new code pull everything from online, via a combination of the 
maven2 public repo as well as our own http repo (just an http view of 
part of our svn directory). This did change some jar version numbers.
    - unit tests currently run ok
    - integration tests currently compile (in Eclipse), but the 
spring-projects version of common-build actually needs to be upgraded to 
do the compiles, and run them.

Going forward, Ulrik and Mattias will continue to mostly maintain the 
code, but I will help at least with logistics.

I will ensure a proper Jira target is set up.

We will most likely release the next version as spring-ldap-1.0.3 to 
continue from ldaptemplate-1.0.2, but I don't think we should feel 100% 
constrained  to this. If somebody can strongly justify the need for a 
refactoring or something of that nature that would entail some big 
changes, it could go out as a 1.1-dev or something like that.

That's a good point.  Correct me if I'm wrong but another reason might
be that you could never create two bean definitions using the same
class with different injected singletons within the same ClassLoader
level.  Any sub classes of the class would have the same problem.

I don't necessarily think the AOP proxy approach is all that ugly or
complex. :)  The functionality to do exactly this already exists with
<aop:scoped-proxy/> for request and session scoped beans for some of
the exact same reasons you need this support for singletons.  Oh well,
it was just a thought.

I'm a little new to this. It seems strange to me that you can lazily
initialize on a bean-by-bean basis. Don't you want to lazy load everything
during development (faster turnaround time on the section of code you're
working on) and eagerly load everything in production (consistent
performance for users)?
