I too think this would be valuable.

I'd like to keep it simple.  The following seems to me the most consistent with
the current syntax and with the Map interface itself:

<map>
  <entry keyref="myBean">
    <ref bean="myTarget"/>
  </entry>
</map>

or 

<map>
  <entry>
    <key>
      <ref bean="myKeyBean"/>
    </key>
    <value>
      <ref bean="myTargetBean"/>
    </value>
  </entry>
</map>

This should also be valid, but I would not recommend using it:

<map>
  <entry>
    <key>
      <ref bean="myKeyBean"/>
    </key>
    <ref bean="myTargetBean"/>
  </entry>
</map>

Using batch updates on Oracle usually provides a drastic performance 
improvement.  Don't know if the same is true for other databases.  I'll 
take a look at Keith's class in the sandbox later on this week.

I like this one, but for consistency purposes, I'd add the local and bean
anyway, even if no DTD checking is possible (but it IS as far as I know).

Both suffer from losing the ability to declare 'local' or 'bean' but that=20
might not matter since neither may be capable of being validated via DTD=20
anyway - I'm no DTD expert.

Both are backward compatible though - if we go with <key> as an element=20
rather than an attribute, existing context definitions will break won't=20
they (unless the String version remains as an attribute which would be=20
somewhat confusing I think)

I wonder though what the use case would be.  I think using objects other=20
than strings as map keys is a common requirement in application code, but=20
in setting up a context?  I'm not sure - did your colleague have a=20
particular scenario in mind that could better be handled with such a=20
change, or was it a discussion item?  It'd be interesting to know!

you the optimal batch size for what I need to do is 5,000.

OK, I've almost got something we can play with...

GenericPortlet -> PortletBean -> FrameworkPortlet -> DispatcherPortlet*
Plus various supporting objects which are mostly a mirror of 
...web.context and web.context.support.  The Portlet API varies enough 
to have to change most of these objects in subtle ways.  Mostly it was a 
cut&paste/replace Servlet with Portlet kind of a job.  I had to deviate 
from that approach when the Portlet API didn't have the same methods 
available, getURI() for instance, or where the calling semantics are 
different, like processAction/render vs doGet/doPost.

* I'm just about to tackle DispatcherPortlet.  It will differ from 
DispatcherServlet in that it can have different HandlerAdaptors 
configured per PortletMode (view, edit, help,...).  Most likely 
candidate for HandlerMappings keys are Request parameters and Session 
attributes.

The DispatcherPortlet also reflects the Portlet two step call with 
abstract methods doRenderService() and doActionService() instead of just 
doService().  Finally, the Porlet API assumes things like multipart 
request and locale selection will be handled by the portal application 
so multipartResolver and localeResolver are probably out.

I am hoping to have something working in a few days.

We just upgraded our uPortal implementation to uP2.3 which supports the 
portlet api via pluto so we're ready to start experimenting with Spring 
support.  I'd like to start a org.springframework.web.portlet package 
modeled after org.springframework.web.servlet.  Has anyone started on 
this yet?

I went ahead and committed an initial stab at this support to the sandbox...

the classes are in the sandbox at:
	org.springframework.jdbc.object.BatchSqlUpdate
	org.springframework.jdbc.object.SimplePreparedStatementSetter

Client usage is exacly like SqlUpdate, there is just an addition of a
setBatchSize method (the default of 100 I just picked out of the air...)

The 'SimplePreparedStatementSetter' class is used by BatchSqlUpdate to
simplify it's code.  It's basically just a strategy refactoring from
PreparedStatementFactory to allow the setting of parameter values against
the same prepared statement.

For our integration here, we ended up subclassing RequestProcessor.  The 
reason was because we're using xdoclet to build our struts-config.xml 
file.  So IIRC we couldn't use DelegatingActionProxy (or the similar 
alternatives) because we needed Xdoclet to read into our action classes.

i noticed that you had incorporated the struts-spring plugin

into spring 1.0.1. I have been using struts and spring

together, and have come up with a different way to glue them

which i think is better. Basically, I have a subclass of

TilesRequestProcessor which overrides the

processActionCreate method to try to look up the action

class in the spring web application context first. if it is

not there, it delegates to the superclass to try to create

it in the usual way. it also provides this functionality for

struts exception handlers. i have also defined a

SpringActionMapping subclass of ActionMapping which allows

you to specify the spring bean name for the action

explicitly, rather than using the path name. this gives you

more flexibility, and is essential if you have multiple path

names mapped into the same action (as for instance when

using a MappingDispatchAction).



the advantage of this approach is that it requires neither a

common base class which has a hardcoded dependency on spring

as well as hardcoded bean names of the services used, nor an

extra action class which just delegates to the real class.



if you are interested in possibly incorporating this into

core Spring, give me your email and i can send you the

relevant classes so it's clearer what i'm talking about.

hadn't thought of contributing it. Good point.

Mine is a JavaBean that uses a JdbcTemplate and holds the page in an
ArrayList. I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can make it generic
enough.

maybe the system beep you got from the editor's
context menu was right too :-)

Both new entries to a text edior's context menu which
are introduced by the Spring beans view (Open Java
type, Show in Beans view) are parsing the editor's
document starting from the current cursor location. If
they don't detect a valid pattern ('<bean ...
class="java type"', '<bean ... id="bean name"',
'<property name="property"', ...) or the selected node
is not available in the beans view then you get a
beep.

Spring Beans UI uses the beep only to indicate "user
errors" ;-). For program errors or installation
failures (e.g. missing Xerces plugin with DOM level 3
compliant XML parser -> Eclipse 3.0 > M8) you will
find a corresponding message or exception in Eclipse's
error log.

I think MyEclipse's XML editor probably tries to validate, but perhaps=20=

can't get to the DTD that is being pointed to.  Perhaps offline?

Either way, their XML editor is not particularly good . For example,=20
you should be able to setup an XML catalog mapping documents to DTD's=20
on your local system, but you can't.  You can, rather sadly, get around=20=

it like this.  Grab the DTD, and rename it to:=20
"http___www.springframework.org_dtd_spring-beans.dtd"  Exactly.  Then=20
copy that file into MyEclipse's=20
plugins/com.genuitec.eclipse.xmen_3.7.2/dtd directory.  Restart the=20
IDE.

Ok, never mind folks.

It turns out on the web site, it clearly states that in order to see
the graphical view, here's what I need to do:

in the Beans view. It provides zooming, hover infos, an outline view and =

I was trying the context menu inside the editor which said 'Show in Sprin=
g
Beans View'. Since I had the Spring Beans view already open, the OS kept
giving me the 'beep' sound. Duh..
