Thanks Rob - I need to test some more, but maybe this is a problem
within the AbstractAutoProxyCreator class (which is what our app is
using to generate proxied instances)
I'll see if I modify my test case to accurately reflect the failures we
get when using (a) the updated Cglib2AopProxy class and (b) the
AbstractAutoProxyCreator instances.
Maybe it has something to do with this snippet:
for (Iterator it =3D allInterceptors.iterator();
it.hasNext();) {
Advisor advisor =3D
this.advisorAdapterRegistry.wrap(it.next());
proxyFactory.addAdvisor(advisor);
}
=09
proxyFactory.setTargetSource(getTargetSource(bean, beanName));
affecting the equality of the advisors?
I'll check into this theory some more...
Thanks
tyson

Subject: Re: [Springframework-developer] Not leveraging the CGLIB cache
I think I have an at least partial answer on this, thanks to some =20
englightenment from Chris N. As they I could not see the wood for the =20
trees. The problem with the test that Tyson supplied was that the first
proxy was advised and the second one was not! The =20
ProxyFactory.copyFrom() method does not copy advisors. So as Chris =20
pointed out we need to implement CallbackFilter.equals() to check that =20
the CallbackFilters are for the same proxies. What confused me was - I =20
knew we had this, Rod had added that some time ago. Then I noticed in =20
the debugger that only the first proxy had the advisor, so Cglib was =20
correctly returning a different proxy class. The rule of thumb is you =20
will only get the same proxy class if the superclass and advice set is =20
the same.
I took the opportunity to make a refactor suggested by Chris and I =20
added a test to verify this case. I plan to improve the =20
CallbackFilter.hashCode() implementation to increase performance in the
next few days.

Yes, for example this makes TransactionProxyFactoryBean attractive again compared to BeanNameAutoProxyCreator to do transactional wrapping, even for the simplere cases of almost identical setup. Last night I committed two fairly significant enhancements to
the core IoC container.
1. Method Injection support. (Similar to what has been
described as "Getter Injection", but I believe that the
concept is more general and needs a more general name.) This
allows Spring to override abstract or concrete methods on
managed objects on deployment, to return the result of
looking up a named bean in the current factory. The lookup
will typically be of a non-singleton bean (although it can
also be a singleton).
This is useful when one object configured via Spring needs to
create instances of a non-singleton bean: for example, a
single-threaded, single-use processing object. E.g.
ThreadSafeService needs to create SingleShotHelper, which is
itself configured via DI. To date it was necessary for
ThreadSafeService to implement BeanFactoryAware, save the
BeanFactory reference and call
getBean("singleShotHelper")
each time it wanted to create a helper. That works fine, but
it's a Spring dependency, and we want a perfectly non-
invasive framework.
With the new functionality, it's possible to use an abstract
(or concrete) method such as
protected SingleShotHelper createSingleShotHelper()
and tell the container to override that method on deployment
to return a specific bean, like this:
<lookup-method name="createSingleShotHelper"
bean="singleShotHelper" />
The methods can be protected or public. Any number of methods
can be overridden.
This way there are no Spring dependencies. A corner case
closed off without needing to import a Spring API. This
feature was directly motivated by requirements in a client
project I'm working on.
Lookup methods can be combined with Setter Injection. They
can't presently be combined with Constructor Injection, but I
will add support for this, assuming that it's possible with
CGLIB.
The implementation uses CGLIB to subclass the class.
I've considered adding the ability to add arbitrary behaviour
in the overridden method--not just a bean lookup--and the
implementation allows this to be added fairly easily (I've
already prototyped it). However, I'm not convinced that the
more general case is an equally desirable feature. There are
other ways of doing this, such as subclassing the class and
overriding the method in the normal way, or using AOP. In the
case of the bean lookup, there is a very definite benefit in
the container doing the override, as it eliminates dependency
on a Spring API. It's also much simpler to describe in XML.
With the more general case, it's necessary to have a way of
identifying overloaded methods etc.
2. Support for creation of bean instances using static
factory methods, as an alternative to constructors. (Empty
JavaBean constructors or Constructor Injection constructors.)
This is potentially useful for legacy code. Joshua Bloch
advocates use of static factory methods in some cases instead
of constructors, and I'm sure many people have taken his
advice! (I doubt I would design new classes this way,
however.)
Arguments can be passed to the static factory methods using
<constructor-arg> elements. (None is required if the factory
method takes no arguments.)
This feature was motivated by the need to create AspectJ
aspects using the aspectOf() static factory method, but I
think it's a useful feature in general. See Adrian Colyer's
blog re AspectJ/Spring, at
http://www.aspectprogrammer.org/blogs/adrian/2004/05/what_the_
teache.html. This will be part of the AspectJ/Spring
integration in Spring 1.1. I think the potential for Spring
to configure AspectJ aspects using DI is very exciting.
The use of a factory method is specified by a new
optional "factory-method" attribute on the bean element. The
factory method must be on the class specified by the "bean"
attribute. This is normally, but not necessarily, the class
that is created by the factory method.
This can also be combined with Setter Injection.
Usage looks like this:
<bean id="whatever" class="whatever"
factory-method="createWhatever">
<constructor-arg index="0"><ref or value...
<property name="xxx"...
If the factory method is overloaded, the container will find
the correct one for the argument types.
Of course, these changes are backward compatible.

I like this. I've just committed a fairly significant reworking of our root/child =
bean definition concept: A child can now inherit respectively override =
virtually any attributes from a parent, not just bean property values =
and the singleton flag. From the new ChildBeanDefinition javadoc:
* <p>Will use the bean class of the parent if none specified, but can
* also override it. In the latter case, the child bean class must be
* compatible with the parent, i.e. accept the parent's property values
* and constructor argument values, if any.
*
* <p>A child bean definition will inherit constructor argument values,
* property values and method overrides from the parent, with the option
* to add new values. If init method, destroy method and/or static =
factory
* method are specified, they will override the corresponding parent =
settings.
*
* <p>The remaining settings will <i>always</i> be taken from the child =
definition:
* depends on, autowire mode, dependency check, singleton, lazy init.
Everything that worked before still works; it should be fully backward =
compatible. Formerly, this mechanism has mainly been used for view =
definitions; there's just a much wider range of usage scenarios now, for =
example:
<bean id=3D"inheritedTestBean" =
class=3D"org.springframework.beans.TestBean">
<property name=3D"name"><value>parent</value></property>
<property name=3D"age"><value>1</value></property>
</bean>
=09
<bean id=3D"inheritsWithDifferentClass" =
class=3D"org.springframework.beans.DerivedTestBean"
parent=3D"inheritedTestBean" init-method=3D"initialize">
<property name=3D"name"><value>override</value></property>
<!-- age should inherit value of 1 from parent -->
</bean>
The child class above uses a different bean class and init method, but =
still inherits the property values from the parent. Alternatively, the =
parent can even omit the bean class completely, simply specifying common =
properties for children:
<bean id=3D"inheritedTestBeanWithoutClass">
<property name=3D"name"><value>parent</value></property>
<property name=3D"age"><value>1</value></property>
</bean>
<bean id=3D"inheritsWithClass" =
class=3D"org.springframework.beans.DerivedTestBean"
parent=3D"inheritedTestBeanWithoutClass" =
init-method=3D"initialize">
<property name=3D"name"><value>override</value></property>
<!-- age should inherit value of 1 from parent -->
</bean>
Of course, such a parent bean cannot get instantiated on its own: It's =
just a template that serves as parent definition for children. =
preInstantiateSingletons will ignore such beans without class and parent =
completely.
I'm aware that this is a significant change in concept, but I've =
experienced repeatedly that this is what users expect it work like - =
being surprised that all they could do was overriding bean property =
values. A colleague of mine has a current use case that I've changed =
this for.
If there any suggestions or objections, feel free to voice them - before =
1.1 RC1 :-)

James,
I didn't manage to get my hands on this much before the 1.0.2 release
so none of my changes are in that release. If you check out the HEAD
from CVS and run your test against that you should be able to get that
test to pass, plus you will see a bunch of other tests for this case.
There is still one optimisation left to be made - that is the cache
lookup is not so fast because I have yet to add a full implementation
for the CallbackFilter.hashCode() method but the caching now passes all
the tests defined CglibAopProxy including a few that had to be
commented out in the past.

Rob,
Thanks for your work in this area. I think you are saying that the 1.0.2
release has the proper fixes in it so it should return the same class name
for a CGLIB-proxied class?
If so, we are not seeing that behavior in our simple unit test. Perhaps you
can simulate its behavior during your investigation:
public void testInstanceOf() throws Exception {
MyDAO myDAO1 = (MyDAO) getSpringContext().getBean("test.myDAO");
MyDAO myDAO2 = (MyDAO) getSpringContext().getBean("test.MyDAO");
assertTrue("Beans looked up from Spring are not the same instance
type.", myDAO1.getClass().isInstance(myDAO2));
}
We initialize a spring context with a dummy bean named "test.myDAO" and
advise it with a simple DebugInterceptor we wrote.
I still can't get this test to pass with the 1.02 release.

I think I have an at least partial answer on this, thanks to some englightenment from Chris N. As they I could not see the wood for the trees. The problem with the test that Tyson supplied was that the first proxy was advised and the second one was not! The ProxyFactory.copyFrom() method does not copy advisors. So as Chris pointed out we need to implement CallbackFilter.equals() to check that the CallbackFilters are for the same proxies. What confused me was - I knew we had this, Rod had added that some time ago. Then I noticed in the debugger that only the first proxy had the advisor, so Cglib was correctly returning a different proxy class. The rule of thumb is you will only get the same proxy class if the superclass and advice set is the same. I took the opportunity to make a refactor suggested by Chris and I added a test to verify this case. I plan to improve the CallbackFilter.hashCode() implementation to increase performance in the next few days. Rod saw those ClassPathXmlApplicationContextTestSuite failures yesterday = too. They are both related to file path patterns: in case of classpath = resources, the class loader must allow to resolve them as files, else = the tests will fail. Eclipse's test class loader seems to be too = restrictive here, while Ant does allow this. Juergen -----Original Message----- From: spr...@li... Those might be the tests that depend on attribute compilation via =
Commons Attributes. Do you run them through the "tests" target of our =
build.xml? Else (like when running them via IntelliJ directly), the =
attribute-related tests will always fail.

Just wanted to check it wasn't something I'd done (like that trivial =20
