    Couple of idea's :
    1. medieval
    2. Zombie
    3. Modern (current Day)
    4. Future Space
    5. Future OCean / Under Water
    6. Future Land

Personally i like the idea of a Medieval Zombie MMORPG with lots of free form building and using everything you find in game.

I like the Medieval approach personally. I have a few other ideas for features that will tie in nicely to it, will be posting in the features section.

Fantasy seems like the most likely approach. Although I like the idea of future with space travel/combat possible.

Although I'm a fan of the transitioning settings (ie Medieval>Golden Age>Modern>etc) I feel like it would be easier to get everyone on the same page by sticking with one era, then maybe looking into a change depending on our future pace.

I always thought there was a lack of Cowboy/Indian environment of gaming. Especially since the current MMORPG market is absolutely flooded with a mixture of Fantasy related Medieval. Having it set in a "Western" Oregon Trail style would both let people feel like they can relate the older Oregon Trail, and how people had to start off with nothingness while living off the land. Prime example of the expansion boom where lawless towns were the norm.

Would also allow a good tie of traditional bow & arrow style with black-powdered weaponry.

Sounds like a great idea, the idea of andvancing weaponary while improving technology sounds like it good give a good base for skill tree's maybe ??

We'd have to be specific as to what technology actually gets advanced, if we gave technology advancements to players who have been in-game longer, it would be like the cloth-clad Native American Indian vs. the metal-armoured dual slinger!

I broke down some player class ideas in the features section, kind of setting the style to a "Good vs Bad" titled "Need vs Greed" since some people worked to put a meal on their table around that time, while others simply robbed a train or stagecoach for what ever supplies they needed.

Ooh I do like that one - it covers a wide range of pre-industrial technology, from flint and stone to early/mid iron. Drawn in with that can be a bit of steampunk - adding technology without the use of electricity. Something like the tech part of Arcanum (one of my favourite RPG titles)

I was just thinking a steampunk tie in. While not my favorite genre personally, I think that is a great idea if we want to pursue the hi-tech/magic options.

I concur, but to the extent of thinking about hi-tech for that time period, and magic being defined as not being able to be explained by current science technology. If we step in to the realm of "Blasting ice bolts" at each other, it instantly takes away from the realistic setting.

Then people would ask, "Well if you can launch ice bolts out of your palm, why do you need water to survive in the frontier, you can simply melt the ice bolts down and drink them!" and sure as the day I was born, silly arguments like that will arise!

Exactly, the uniqueness of this game alone would bring in the crowds of curious players.

I'm not decisive on it, but that would be grounds for a split player base. Battling for the frontier.

    For example:
The Greedy (Outlaws, Cowboys, Miners, Hucksters) Each with specific skills.
The Needy (Native American Indians, Pioneers, Lawmen, Scientists)

    Which side will you take?

I like the western idea. The biggest western title I can think of of late would be Red Dead but what we have in mind is far beyond the scope of Red Dead.

Turn of the century frontier with magic/steampunk tie in then?
Is it set in a fictional land or an alternate reality of an existing place? Edward_Elric would understand what I mean, something like the alchemy v.s. the science worlds Edward travels between in the Full Metal Alchemist series.

My brother brought up a cool idea for a survival horror/post apocalypse game to me last night. Use google maps or something similar to accurately map and make playable real world locations. Think about rummaging through your own neighborhood for supplies while killing zombies and deciding if you need to murder someone you see passing through the street to stay alive. Doesn't necessarily fit what we are talking about but, food for thought.

Red Dead is a great game; again the uniqueness of the whole "Western" style puts players in an unfamiliar setting without the castles, mages, knights, etc.

I feel like throwing steam-punk in there is a great idea, but more along the lines of "New Era Inventions" to steer clear of the complete fictional side of things. Of course some of the skills/weapons/items/vehicles won't be 100% historically accurate, but as long as it's feasibly possible then we should throw it in there. For example, in the movie Wild Wild West there was a MASSIVE mechanical spider and all sorts of inventions that people of the time would deem "Magic".

Going on a limb here, but I always appreciated the brilliant vocabulary mixed with proper historically correct terms being used for places/people/things within games. (Short story) I was in a college history class and the professor had asked what a trebuchet was, and what it was used for. I was the only one that had a clue, and knew exactly what it was for. Why you ask? Because of medieval era video games using proper terminology. The entire class (About 32 people) were literally blown away that I even knew anything about it.

Yea I can understand the avoiding of magic if we want at least a quasi real system. The steampunk genre adds that mystical whimsy feel but at least by saying science and physical laws are the basis of it.

The likes of Alchemy then ?? Technically not magic but science instead.

I like the idea but it may be too magical still.

Well usually Alchemy is more material based instead of like Potions in other games such as Skyrim and Oblivion. Main function of Alchemy is to transmute materials that are in compound form of another material. However they would only amass to something of the same weight as the raw ingredients.

I know what you are saying but, how something gets from form 1 to form 2 is the magic part. Its more plausible and we can at least have some explanation attached to it other than simply 'it's magic!' Don't get me wrong, I like the idea, just saying we will need to figure out how we explain the disconnect from form 1 to form 2.

Exactly, if a sword can somehow do "+2 damage and +4 sight" without literally being sharper or having some sort of scope on it, then it's basically magic.

I would say it would be a better idea for Alchemy to be the prerequisite to Chemistry, where as raw material can be mixed to create black powder, medicine, nutrient mixes(Temporary plus stats if need be) if we threw in transmuting into the fray, we'd be just like everyone else.

Sadly I joined this project a little late...but I have always wanted to make a game set in a world similar to TV show "Reboot". However many have mention some really solid ideas so I think maybe moving forward on them is a better idea then going off on a tangent.

I'm getting two animators to crank out some unique characters /weap/items/environments for us to soak in fresh ideas. Hopefully I'll post a few this weekend, keep your eyes peeled!
