Yep, especially it's easy for userland developers just upgrading the SPI 
core. (For instance, MTD project is a separate one and is not 
'hard-linked' with any specific kernel version, SPI development seems to 
go the same way.)

Please also remember about guys on slow machines for whom the 
compilation can easily take quarter an hour.
