NAT workaround fix?

I'm not an expert by any means and what I am proposing
may be inapplicable, but if NAT "boxes" are preventing
server connections, wouldn't it be possible to create
some kind of daemon to run on someone's personal
server that serves as the router for their NAT (like a
linux or bsd box) that acts as a Look Who's Listening
server for the computers behind the NAT box so they
can be connected to, or does NAT not allow for this?
home lans usually have their own static ip behind the
NAT box that I think would allow people to look up and
exchange ip addresses via email or instant messenger I
would suppose even if they their NAT box was assigned
dynamic ones.
