#41 system hangs with creative vista webcam

I tried a webcam creative vista

idVendor 0x041e Creative Technology, Ltd
idProduct 0x403b

with Ubuntu 5.10 _Breezy Badger_ - Release i386. I
first tried the webcam with ekiga then with xwatv but
in both cases my system hangs completely very early
when the programs tried to "touch" the device. I
downloaded the latest source version of the driver

spca5xx-20060402

recompiled my kernel 2.6.12 with gcc-3.4 but the
problem remains. The last log I can read on the screen
from xawtv --debug=4 is (copied by hand then)
