Jim, Sorry about the problem you're having.....I'm currently in the process of moving from San Francisco to Dallas atm. I should have my firewire drives unpacked at some point tomorrow and can get you whatever I have. -t On Jun 24, 2004, at 3:30 PM, Jim Witte wrote: > Hello, > > When I tried to open the binary package installer (which was listed > as only *2* K by sourceforge) for Space 0.85, it said it couldn't find > the Bill of Materials. Hello, When I tried to open the binary package installer (which was listed as only *2* K by sourceforge) for Space 0.85, it said it couldn't find the Bill of Materials. I looked at the package, and there was nothing there. Is there a correct binary somewhere. If I open the source project up in xCode 1.1, it says 'icon-new-128.psd' is missing, and when I try to build, it stops almost immediately with 1 error, but won't tell me what it is (Errors&Warnings pane is empty) Any ideas? I saw a graffito yesterday: "Make God laugh -- tell him your plans." So it is that I am writing to you, Jaguar has been released, and the repository for CVS is still not available. That is the bad news. Here is the good news: Space.app seems to work under Jaguar. A couple of people mailed me to let me know that the hiding and showing of applications may be a little slower, but that is the only new problem I am aware of. (One of the writers qualified this problem -- he said that Mail.app may be the only application that has really slowed down.) Regarding the CVS repository, and consequently the next release: I almost have it ready to go. This has involved integrating Morgan Aldridge's improvements to the palette, Gregory Seidman's Applescript support and Ishioka Hiroshi's localization code and Japanese translations with a few bug fixes of my own and support for hotkey-per-workspace with some help from Bruce Jacobs. Still to be integrated is Clemens Benden's screen capture code. It needs another solid couple of days of work. As usual, I am terribly distracted, which is why it has not gotten the work that it needs yet. I appreciate everybody working to keep this project alive, and I am sorry to be the bottleneck. Once the repository is in place, I will be able to remove myself as an obstacle. Thank you for your continuing support and your patience. --Riley |

Sorry, I've been really busy lately and haven't gotten to even look
at my copy of Space.app in a long time. Now, I had made some fairly
heavy modifications to my copy (the modified palette window, showing
application icons in the space buttons in the palette window, storing
preferred spaces for apps, etc.) but it was such a mess (as I have
explained to Riley) that I'm really hesitant to use it for more than
just a proof-of-concept.
One of the things I ran into that was a major issue with my
modifications was that I had to do strange hacks to get the
functionality I wanted out of the Space and SpaceProcess classes. I
know atleast one of the major bugs to date (switching spaces too quickly
can move apps to different spaces if they weren't finished
showing/hiding in time) is caused by the current implementations.
I think that the first of my features (except for the modified
palette window, which I believe Riley has already implemented) which I
feel should be implemented is remembering applications' spaces. In
order to implement this, future features, and also to fix the
space-switching bug, I propose that we discuss the current architecture
of the Space and SpaceProcess classes, what really needs to be changed,
what should be kept, and devise a plan of action for reworking them
(whether that means only minor modifications or a large overhaul) and
getting the new versions integrated with the current Space.app
implementation. Does that sound like a good starting point to the rest
of you who would be working on the code? If so I can describe my
observations relating to the functionality of the Space and SpaceProcess
classes.
Morgan Aldridge

I've discovered that someone is breaking the license to Space.app and I'd like your advice. There is a program called "Virtual Desktops" (NOT the same as "Codetek Virtual Desktops") which has "borrowed" substantial code from Space.app. The source of the program is not available (it's a closed-source shareware program), but an examination of binary with class-dump and otool indicates that the "Space" and "SpaceProcess" class have been incorporated with only slight modifications. Here is a sample: http://www.codeclever.com/separated.html I confronted the author (Roger O'Brien, aka "whitesaint") via email. He initially denied that he had taken anything from Space.app, but after I showed him the "Separated" page he admitted that he did and he pleaded with me not to "put [him] in jail". (He is a teenager.) I explained to him the steps I saw as necessary to bring "Virtual Desktops" into compliance with the QPL, to wit: - The present version of "Virtual Desktops" should be re-released under an Open Source (i.e. satisfying 6a and 6b) license. - A copy of the QPL, any additional license, and a notice about the availability of the source code should be added to the binary distribution. - A distribution of the source code should be prepared including the QPL license and any additional license. - The modified classes from Space.app should have their original copyright notice intact and should be commented in some way to indicate that they have been altered from the originals. He agreed that he would do it within 2 weeks (on July 12), but then he stopped responding to emails. I also asked him to cease distributing the license-breaking binaries, but he has not acknowledged this request and the program is still available from his web site: http://www.cocoaserver.com (Use Internet Explorer for this site -- OmniWeb and Chimera, or at least the versions that I am using, don't display it correctly.) I think I made a mistake in dealing with Roger: I felt sorry for him and I told him that I had never heard of anyone going to jail for breaking an Open Source license. I didn't want him to be scared. I haven't heard from him since. Yes, I understand that I am a total sucker. I sentence myself to loading Oingo Boingo's "Only a Lad" (a song satirizing lenient juvenile justice) into iTunes and playing it on repeat until I am no longer disturbed by its endorsement of capital punishment. But really -- my question for you is: What is to be done? I feel like I would be setting a bad example if I let the license be infringed like this. Even if it is "Only a Lad". Thanks for your help, Riley Lynch |

All, So after discussing a bit with Riley I've been dealing with a new site. Go take a look at http://fusion94.org and let me know what you think. If you're looking at it on the Mac it has issues. If you have access to a windows box take a look at it there. I know that the content boxes on the right have severe issues atm but that's an image thing that will be corrected in the next 24 hours. Just let the list know if it's an improvement and provide feedback. Thanks -t -- Tony Guntharp Founder/CTO - Isquare, Inc (p) 415-637-6895 (e) fus...@is... http://www.isquare.org |

This is the message that I got when I tried to add those flags to the project: cvs [server aborted]: -t/-f wrappers not supported by this version of CVS We can use the supported functionality of cvswrappers to automatically add the binary flags to the .nib files, .icns files and so on. --Riley |

I definitely like this second one, very nice :) Now, I like the way it looks now, but I keep wondering what it would look like with either a small application icon in each sphere, or a small screenshot in each. Probably won't look right, but thought I'd throw the idea out there in case you wanted to try a mockup if it sounded interesting. =09Morgan On Mon, 15 Jul 2002, Tony Guntharp wrote: > All, > Here's version 2, still don=B9t finished yet. > Feedback appreciated on both. > > -t > -- > Tony Guntharp > Founder/CTO - Isquare, Inc > (p) 415-637-6895 > (e) fus...@is... > http://www.isquare.org > > > |
