Hi, Chris. I'm afraid you have raised a subject that I don't know anything about. The SJ Server runs inside of Tomcat or some other servlet/JSP container, so my best advice would be to check Tomcat for information on running Tomcat as a service (which is essentially what you are doing). I'll check there as well. Hopefully the two of us can figure this out. --Rob --- gpduck <gp...@ti...> wrote: > I am having problems running SJ as a service in W2k. > I have tried several > "run as service" programs and they are all doing > pretty much the same thing. > What is happening is when the computer boots the > service starts and > everything is fine. I am having problems running SJ as a service in W2k. I have tried several "run as service" programs and they are all doing pretty much the same thing. What is happening is when the computer boots the service starts and everything is fine. Then the user logs in (to w2k) and everything is still fine. However when the user logs out, the "run as service" program continues to run while the SJ server does not. I haven't been able to find any help for this online. Is there something I am missing here? |

Chris, > > I had already copied the SJ context from the > server_sourcejammer.xml to > the server.xml that came with 3.2.4 so I had it > running when I got home > and got this mail. Yep. That's exactly what I did. I was communicating with another guy yesterday who was having the exact same issues as you. I sent him the same files and they seemed to do the trick, so I will post those on the site ASAP. > I got a bunch of errors when I > first tried to set up > a project, I ended up having to set it up and then > restart the GUI > before the new project would appear. I have never seen this behavior. Do you happen to remember any of the details? I would appreciate it if you would let me know if this happens again. > Also there are > errors appearing > all over the Tomcat/SJ server window, it looks like > a bunch of unhandled > exceptions for different things. Everything appears > to be working > though. I've seen the occasional non-fatal exception, but not usually that many. Again, I'd appreciate it if you would send a few details so I can try to solve the problem, if necessary. >I've started playing with the software and > it looks good. I am > going to be using it to manage a senior project at > school. Excellent. I'd love to hear how that works out. Did I mention to you that version 1.1 (beta) will be ready in a week or so? Upgrading from 1.0 to 1.1 should be fairly simple, but everyone will need to use the 1.1 client. One of the biggest benefits of 1.1 over 1.0 is better text-file support. For example, in 1.1 you can select the EOL type (windows or unix) any time you retrieve a text file from the server. The GUI is also a lot more solid. And you can a provide read-only web interface to your server if you want. Thought you might want to know. > > I'm not sure about licensing issues with Tomcat, but > you may want to > download the version of Tomcat you get SJ working > with and then provide > both together. I thought about doing that. It's probably a good idea. There are no licensing issues to prevent it. I'll try to provide this with SJ 1.1. > Thanks for your help getting things going. No problem. Best of luck. --Rob __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE video emails in Yahoo! Mail! http://promo.yahoo.com/videomail/ |

I think the problem is that Tomcat 3.2.4 requires Xerces 1.4.4, and the version of xerces.jar that comes in the server installation package is from an earlier version. You should be able to download Xerces 1.4.4 from the xerces site: http://xml.apache.org/dist/xerces-j/ Download Xerces-J-bin.1.4.4.zip, unzip it (I had to use jar, for some reason), take xerces.jar and drop it into your sourcejammer/WEB-INF/lib directory. Hopefully you won't encounter any more errors. Oh, one other thing. You may need to remove the "Fix Headers" entry in server_sourcejammer.xml. Good luck. And thanks for sticking with it. By the way, I am going to be releasing SJ 1.1 beta in a couple of weeks. I hope to have some default scripts that will work with Tomcat 3.2.4 and 3.3 at that time. Thought you might like to know. 1.1 represents a pretty large improvement over 1.0, though most of the core functionality is the same. --Rob > __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi, Ray. I think I may know what the problem is. I think the script is sending an invalid parameter to tomcat 3.2.4 (it was valid under earlier versions). Try modifying your start_sourcejammer.bat by replacing the following line: call %TOMCAT_HOME%\bin\tomcat_sj start -f %TOMCAT_HOME%\conf\server_sourcejammer.xml "$@" with call %TOMCAT_HOME%\bin\tomcat_sj start -f %TOMCAT_HOME%\conf\server_sourcejammer.xml (In other words, just get rid of that "$@" at the end.' You'll probably need to make the same change to your stop_sourcejammer.bat file. Please let me know if this works for you. --Rob --- Ray Greene <ra...@es...> wrote: > On 17 Jan 2002, at 7:33, Robert MacGrogan wrote: > > > Hi, Ray. > > > > > It opens another DOS box briefly then closes it. > I'm > > > unable to see what is > > > in the second box. Soon I would like to provide some default script files that work on the newer versions of Tomcat. It is remarkably difficult to keep up when they keep coming out with new versions of Tomcat all the time. > > Right now I am getting an error that looks like this > when I try to start > the server. > > Starting tomcat. I've looked for it on the Jakarta-Tomat site and have not found it yet. Let me suggest a couple of possibilities, and forgive me if these are things you've already checked. First of all, is the sj_server.jar file where it is supposed to be? And are you sure that the truncated directory names (source~1) are correct? You could try removing the "soap" context from server_sourcejammer.xml, but I'm not convinced that will change anything. You could also try removing "start" from the "startMeUp:" section of tomcat_sj.bat to see if there's any more information. One other thing to try. Remove the load-on-startup node from the AppConfigInitServlet in your web.xml file. If this works, you will have to hit the servlet (url/SysConfig) before you try to connect to your server with SourceJammer. If all else fails, you could send me your modified script files and I could look for any red flags. --Rob > > The script just sits there at this point. Hi, Ray. > It opens another DOS box briefly then closes it. I'm > unable to see what is > in the second box. What exactly should I see if it > starts correctly? The 2nd DOS window will stay open and will display some messages. It is definitely not starting. Try changing the tomcat_sj.bat file so that Tomcat does not start in a new DOS window so you can see your error messages. Look for the section ":startMeUp". Then change the line that begins: start java %TOMCAT_OPS% to: java %TOMCAT_OPS% . . . In other words, just remove the word "start". This should launch Tomcat in your current DOS window, so you will be able to see all the messages when it crashes. Then send those messages to me. > > I tried the URL > (localhost:8080/sourcejammer/servlet/rpcrouter) but > I get > an error message "server not found". > > > If this does cause the script to choke, you can > > comment out that part of the sj_tomcat.bat file. Hello all. I am trying to get Source Jammer running on Win 98 with Tomcat 3.2.4. Here are my notes from my install so you will know where I am at. Copy unzipped folders for Source Jammer and Tomcat. set JAVA_HOME = jdk directory set SJ_HOME = c:\source~1\server\webapps\source~1\web-inf set TOMCAT_HOME = c:\jakart~1.4 Copy .bat files and XML files as instructed *In start_sourcejammer.bat remove "$@" from end of tomcat_sj.bat call *In tomcat_sj.bat fix returns on set CLASSPATH=. line Change SimpleMapper to SimpleMapper1 in server_sourcejammer.xml Remove SecurityCheck entry in server_sourcejammer.xml *Remove FixHeaders entry in server_sourcejammer.xml *Copy xerces.jar ver 1.4.4 into sj \lib directory The steps marked with a * are undocumented as far as I can tell but they appear to have fixed errors in my installation (also they could be causing them :)) The "$@" was causing Tomcat to give me a syntax description. The CLASSPATH line error was causing an error related to syntax or bad command or some such (I don't recall the exact error). FixHeaders was giving a similar error to SecurityCheck. The xerces file was related to an error that said SAXParserFactory not found. Right now I am getting an error that looks like this when I try to start the server. Starting tomcat. Check logs/tomcat.log for error messages cannot load servlet name: jsp: null cannot load servlet name: jsp: null cannot load servlet name: AppConfigInitServlet: null cannot load servlet name: jsp: null cannot load servlet name: jsp: null cannot load servlet name: jsp: null cannot load servlet name: jsp: null The script just sits there at this point. I have tried connecting to the server in my web browser and using NetCat (port connection software) and do not recieve anything from the server. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Also here is the dos window from the run so you can check out my class path and such. C:\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.4\bin>start_sourcejammer Tomcat Home: c:\jakart~1.4 SJ Home: C:\source~1\server\webapps\source~1\WEB-INF Starting tomcat in new window Using classpath: C:\source~1\server\webapps\source~1\WEB-INF\lib\xerces.jar;c:\j akart~1.4\classes;c:\jakart~1.4\lib\webserver.jar;c:\jakart~1.4\lib\jasper.jar;c :\jakart~1.4\lib\xml.jar;c:\jakart~1.4\lib\servlet.jar;C:\source~1\server\webapp s\source~1\WEB-INF\lib\activation.jar;C:\source~1\server\webapps\source~1\WEB-IN F\lib\mail.jar;C:\source~1\server\webapps\source~1\WEB-INF\lib\soap.jar;C:\sourc e~1\server\webapps\source~1\WEB-INF\lib\sj_lib.jar;C:\source~1\server\webapps\so urce~1\WEB-INF\lib\sj_server.jar C:\jakarta-tomcat-3.2.4\bin> Thanks Chris |

Hi, Ray. (sorry if you get this twice) I'm perfectly happy to try to help you out. First of all, is this even a fatal error? The script seems to continue executing after failing to fine the tomcat/classes directory. You can check if you SJ server is running by hitting it's URI with a web broswer. You should get a message if it is running. If this does cause the script to choke, you can comment out that part of the sj_tomcat.bat file. I think the line is: set CLASSPATH=%TOMCAT_HOME%\classes You should check the FAQ on the sourcejammer.org site about how to modify your server_sourcejammer.xml file to work with later versions of Tomcat. Hopefully some of this is helpful. If not, please let me know. --Rob --- Ray Greene <ra...@es...> wrote: > Hi Robert, > > I'm trying out SourceJammer but I'm having some > trouble installing the > server. The SOAP implementation works well, so unless there is a very strong reason to try something else, it's probably best to stick with SOAP. Plus, pretty much all of the grunt work for SOAP is taken care of by the Apache SOAP packages. The objects SJ sends through SOAP are all made up of simple get and set methods, so the serialization and de-serialization is all taken care of by Apache-SOAP w/out any customized serializers. --Rob _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com |

Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing depends on your needs: http://weblog.masukomi.org/writings/xml-rpc_vs_soap.htm > Perhaps one idea would be to provide plugins for SJ to support either > protocol . . . I actually thought that XML-RPC would be fairly ideal for SourceJammer. Since it's already been implemented with SOAP, though, there isn't really much need for it to support XML-RPC as well. How many different XML-based remote-procedure-calling/object-brokering protocols does one need in one piece of software? _________________ mike |

Hi, Dean. I went to the Tomcat site and found out what the issue is. server_sourcejammer.xml was created for tomcat 3.2. As usual, when Tomcat moves to a new version, they have some incompatibilities with previous versions that are unannounced. The Tomcat 3.3 documentation seems to indicate that you need to change the Logger nodes in server_sourcejammer.xml to LogSetter. (For details: http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-3.3-doc/serverxml.html#LogEvents) Give that a try and let me know if it works. If it does, I'll post a FAQ. As for your question about why SJ uses SOAP . . . Well, there's no grand answer. SOAP was pretty hot when I started this project (and it still pretty much is), and one of the reasons I started the project in the first place was to teach myself to use SOAP. I've only read a little about XML-RPC and from what I know about it, it seems very similar to SOAP. It involves serializing objects in a standard way to XML documents and transports these documents using HTTP. What the big differences are, I don't know. If you have a strong reason for prefering XML-RPC to SOAP, I would like to hear it. Perhaps one idea would be to provide plugins for SJ to support either protocol . . . --Rob >From: Dean Hiller <dh...@av...> >To: Robert MacGrogan <rob...@ho...> >Subject: sourcejammer NOT WORK >Date: Thu, 03 Jan 2002 07:23:58 -0700 > >I tried getting sourcejammer up last night, but couldn't get it to run. >Please send me tomcat, as the tomcat I am using doesn't have a class >org.apache.tomcat.util.log.QueueLogger. I am running apache with resin 2.0.3 as the servlet container. Very easy: 1) Create web-apps for sourcejammer and soap, e.g.: Put the following into your resin.conf (adjusting for paths of course): <web-app id='/sourcejammer' app-dir='C:\sourcejammer\server\webapps\sourcejammer'> ...optional stuff... </web-app> <web-app id='/soap' app-dir='c:\SourceJammer\server\webapps\sourcejammer\soap'> ...optional stuff... </web-app> 2) Make sure that the appropriate libraries are in the /lib/ directories of your web app. For example, I put xerces.jar and soap.jar in C:\sourcejammer\server\webapps\sourcejammer\WEB-INF\lib. 3) Make sure Apache knows to forward along sourcejammer requests to resin (just in case it gets called on port 80 instead of 8080 which is what resin's httpd is running on): httpd.conf is like this: LoadModule caucho_module C:\Resin\resin-2.0.3\srun\win32-1.3.6\mod_caucho.dll CauchoHost localhost 6802 AddHandler caucho-request jsp <Location /servlet/*> SetHandler caucho-request </Location> <Location /sourcejammer/*> SetHandler caucho-request </Location> <Location /soap/*> SetHandler caucho-request </Location> 4) Follow the rest of the steps as described in the readme.txt. The tomcat specific .bat files won't work obviously but sourcejammer should be up and running when you start resin. You might want to play around with resin's web-app settings in order to log things correctly and duplicate the functionality of the server_sourcejammer.xml file: http://www.caucho.com/products/resin/ref/app-config.xtp Cheers! Hi, John. I've looked at your deploy script and I think I see the problem. First of all, you don't need sj_server.jar in your classpath to run this script. It probably doesn't do any harm though. Secondly, (and I believe this is the problem) if the xml file you are trying to deploy (sourcejammer_server.xml) is the sourcejammer_server.xml file provided by the installation package, then you are trying to deploy the wrong file. The file you need to deploy is SJDeploymentDescriptor.xml. Please let me know if this helps. --Rob >From: John Baker <Joh...@Su...> >To: Robert MacGrogan <rob...@ho...>, >sou...@li... >Subject: Re: SOAP Error creating an archive >Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 17:22:21 -0800 > > > >Hi Rob, > > Thanks for the quick reply! > > After adding mail.jar and activation.jar to the CLASSPATH in deploy.sh, > I ran > > deploy.sh server_sourcejammer.xml > > Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException > at > >org.apache.soap.server.DeploymentDescriptor.fromXML(DeploymentDescriptor.java:415) > at > >org.apache.soap.server.ServiceManagerClient.main(ServiceManagerClient.java:228) > [Loaded java.lang.Shutdown$Lock from /usr/j2sdk1_3_1/jre/lib/rt.jar] > > Tomcat is running. > Have an idea? > > Thanks, > John > > _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp |

Hi, John. I'm pretty sure I know what's going on. The response you are getting -- "SourceJammer is up and running!" is the response you should get if you hit: http://myurl/sourcejammer But this is not the uri that SOAP listens on. This should be: http://myurl/sourcejammer/servlet/rpcrouter I suspect that you could get this work in both the command line and the GUI. Give it a shot and please let us know how it works out. And thanks for using SourceJammer! --Rob PS: Make sure that you have run the deploy script on your server, pointing to the above address, before trying to run either the client or server. >From: John Baker <Joh...@Su...> >To: rob...@ho... >Subject: SOAP Error creating an archive >Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2001 14:56:03 -0800 > > >Hi Robert, > >I'm very interested in evaluating SourceJammer >as I'm learning SOAP. > >I downloaded the source for SourceJammer and the server, >client and library compiled fine. > >Now I'm trying to make an archive, so I check the FAQ >and see the workaround: > >--- > You can use the commandline client utility to > create your new archive. Hi, Tom. I don't know of anyone who has run the SourceJammer server under an engine other than Tomcat, so I'm anxious to find you how this works out. The only servlets you need are: 1. AppConfigInitServlet -- org.sourcejammer.web.servlet.AppConfigInitServlet. This initializes the application at startup, so this servlet's init method should be called when the application starts. 2. rpcrouter -- org.apache.soap.server.http.RPCRouterServlet. This servlet is called for all SOAP requests from the client. 3. messagerouter -- org.apache.soap.server.http.MessageRouterServlet. Not sure what this is used for. I think the main trick is going to be getting Apache-SOAP to run under your servlet engine. If you can do that, the getting SourceJammer to run should be no problem. AppConfigInitServlet requires an init param. You can see it in the web.xml file in the WEB-INF directory. But here it is anyway: param: baseConfigPath value: path to the conf directory on the server. This is where the conf.xml, users.xml, and userCounter files are located, as well as a filesys directory with some additional files. That should be all you need to know. Let us know how it goes. --Rob >From: Tom Gutwin <gu...@ac...> >To: rob...@ho... >Subject: Source Jammer on a different Servlet engine >Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 15:58:21 -0800 > >Hi, I downloaded SourceJammer with the intention of >getting it running on the Caucho/resin servlet engine. >An potentialy Jetty. > 2. Verify that xerces.jar is in the expected location. AHA! This was the problem. tomcat_sj.sh assumed that the jar files were in /usr/local/sourcejammer/webapps/sourcejammer/WEB-INF/lib when they were actually in /usr/local/sourcejammer/server/webapps/sourcejammer/WEB-INF/lib ^^^^^^^ The omission of the "/server" occurs throughout the scripts provided with the lastest full server release (sourcejammer-server-1.0.0.2-full.tar.gz). I thought I had tracked it down everywhere, but I had obviously missed one. :) Once I changed tomcat_sj.sh, the SOAP service deployed correctly. If I go to http://localhost:8080/sourcejammer/soap/admin with my web browser, I can verify this. Onward with the setup process. Woohoo! _________________ mike |

Hi, Michael. Thanks for using SourceJammer, and thanks for checking out the FAQ first. Looks like I'll be updating that FAQ when you get your issue resolved. Here is a list of things to check. 1. Try hitting your sourcejammer server from a web browser to make sure that it is up. 2. Verify that xerces.jar is in the expected location. 3. What version of xerces are you using? Did you get the "full" version of the server, which contains xerces.jar. This may be a xerces version issue, and I've never taken the trouble to verify exactly which versions of xerces SJ is compatable with, but I know it works with the version of xerces packaged in the "full" installations. If none of this is helpful, then please send the complete error message output by deploy.sh. Thanks. --Rob >From: "Michael Casaday" <me...@in...> >To: <sou...@li...> >Subject: [SourceJammer-users] deploying SOAP service >Date: Tue, 20 Nov 2001 14:28:55 -0800 > >Hi. Hi. I'm having some trouble setting up SourceJammer. I'm running Tomcat 2.3.2 on Linux. I've managed to get to the point where I deploy the SOAP service using the deploy.sh script. Yes. This is a bug in DOS, which is used to invoke the Java VM for SourceJammer. You can find it listed on java.sun.com: http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4089199.html Perhaps at somepoint we will build a exe for Windows to invoke the client. At that point the problem might go away. In the meantime, I'll post a FAQ on this subject. Sorry about the annoyance. --Rob PS: How do you like SourceJammer so far? Hi, Jennifer. Again, I think I need more information about the exact steps you have followed. But regardless, here is a list of the steps you need to follow to get SJ working. 1. Install server and set up server scripts ( you've obviously done this) 2. Run the deploy script. 3. install the client 4. Execute sj_gui 5. Create a new archive. Here's how: a. Cancel the "Archives" dialog b. Select Tools | Make New Archive c. Archive Name: A name for the archive. (you must remember it) d. Server URL: Url to your sourcejammer server. Like <myurl>/sourcejammer/servlet/rpcrouter. e. User name: admin (unless you have created another user) f. Password: admin (unless you have changed the admin password. g. Click OK. 6. Add your new archive to your client's list of archive definitions. Here's how; a. Select Connection | Connect. b. Click the New button. c. A name . . . : Any name you want. For display on your client only. d. URL: Same URL as when you created the archive e. Archive Name: Archive Name you used when creating the archive. f. click OK. g. Now you should see the name of the new archive definition in the dialog. h. select the archive definition you just created and click Connect. Have you followed all these steps? If you have and you are still having trouble, you could check the terminal.log file for your SourceJammer server. It may show a more detailed error message. Let me know . . . --Rob 5. In the Archives dialog (which pops up when you first start the GUI and which you can also get by selecting Connection | Connect) >From: Jennifer Thompson <jen...@um...> >To: "Robert MacGrogan" <rob...@ho...> >Subject: Re: Starting SourceJammer Server >Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2001 08:30:47 -0400 > >Hi Rob, > >I tried what you suggested and now when I start the sj_gui.bat and tried to >connest to the archive that I set up, I get an error saying that >Sourcejammer is having trouble connecting to the server. > >Do you know what I might be missing? > >Thank you, > >Jennifer > > >At 02:09 PM 10/16/01 -0400, you wrote: >>Hi, Jennifer. >> >>Thanks for using SourceJammer! >> >>From the results you've sent me, it looks like the server started up just >>fine. >> >>Are you concerned about the message ">XmlMapper: Can't find method >>setDescription in Wrapper(rpcrouter null)"? Thanks, Sindhu. I'm glad you got SJ up and running and I'm really happy that you like it. Please let me know if I can be of any help in the future. Also, you might want to check back at www.sourcejammer.org in a month or so. We are at work on the next release and hope to have it ready soon. --Rob >From: si...@pa... >To: rob...@ho... >Subject: Thanks >Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 07:02:50 -0700 (PDT) > >Hi Rob, > >Many Thanks for all your help and patience. Hi, Jennifer. Thanks for using SourceJammer! From the results you've sent me, it looks like the server started up just fine. Are you concerned about the message ">XmlMapper: Can't find method setDescription in Wrapper(rpcrouter null)"? I believe I have seen this message before, but I am not sure that there is a problem when you see this message. Are you having some kind of problem? Have you tried running the deploy script? Have you tried connecting to the server and creating a new archive? I'm happy to help you out. Try running the deploy script and let me know what happens. Thanks --Rob >From: Jennifer Thompson <jen...@um...> >To: rob...@ho... >Subject: Source Jammer >Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 12:11:28 -0400 > >Hello Robert! > >i am a Java developer at the university of Michigan that has been put in >charge to find version control software for our team.
