#54 pre-#48 ascii char seen blank for req.

I have a standard

required : phone

It appears that if any ascii character prior to ascii
48 (except for ascii 32, space) sets off a required
failure.

Thus a person entering a phone number (888) 555-1212
gets the error message I have designed for an empty
phone field.

This is, of course, the case with all required fields.
