#2 MacOS keyboard volume control does not work properly

Configuration:

PowerMac G4/867, os 10.2.4

Built-in audio + Griffin iMic

Problem:

Adjusting the volume from the keyboard's volume control
keys only affects the iMic; it has no effect when I'm
using the built-in sound (although the volume level
overlay does go up and down)
