term: cis-acting homologous chromosome pairing factor

proposed def: A genome region where chromosome pairing occurs preferentially during homologous chromosome pairing during early meiotic prophase of Meiosis I.

comment: An example of this is the Sme2 locus in fission yeast S. pombe, where is is coincident with an ribonuclear complex termed the "Mei2 dot"
refs: PMID:22582262, PMID:24173580, PMID:23117617

synonym related: "sme2 locus" (so far this is the only know example in eukaryotedom so I think it could be a synonym, it is not known if there are others in pombe)

    change "factor" to "region"

This is a little confusing to me as it looks like Sme2 is transcribed. Is it a kind of transcript or a DNA motif?

(Also sorry for not getting back to you sooner.)

    Hi Karen,

It's both. It is a transcribed region, but the DNA locus is important to initiate chromosome pairing (by some mechanism which involves the non-coding transcript). We want to define a term in our phenotype ontology which refers specifically to the DNA locus, and not the RNA, as this is functionally significant, independently of the transcript.

This is the main paper PMID:22582262

    Cheers,

    val

      Hi Karen,
Is this request OK? (I don't see the term yet)
      cheers
