in the most recent version of things, you need to press RETURN to
"activate" the new value. i am still thinking about the best way
around this. the problem is that i don't want to use a partly-typed
number, at least i think i don't, so you need some "out of band"
operation to say "i'm done". or perhaps it really is OK to use the
partly typed number. let me know what you think.
