Atif and I have sorted the array uniqueness problem and committed to sf. Multiple arrays can now be addressed separately through the update button. The code changes are service-input.xsl and more_fields. The only things that have to be fixed are the boolean and calendar arrays. The wrapper classes also need validators inserted. If you've got a moment, Rob. Once these are sorted the next release can go ahead. Brian |

Socceroos, I suspect that the number of custom stylesheets is going to grow fairly rapidly now. Presently, the engine is hoovering up all the stylesheets to put in the distribution. I think the best thing is to create a new module for custom style sheets on sf. I'll also put a docs directory in which can be deposited any overview or help documents that might be associated with the service. Regards, Brian |

Solpadines, The latest build of the engine squeaks because <xsl:param name="operationID" select="'2'"/> was removed at my request from service- response.xsl. I've put it back on sf with its default value set to 999. I've also put the default value of the absoluteURL to the local host rather than socket. Neither of these defaults should ever come into play since we inject values each time, but the top level param statements are needed. I put a corrected stylesheet into the gene_ontology service at: http://socket.leeds.ac.uk/gene_ontology/consumer/ operation_list.html If you submit toxin activity into operation 1 you see that the response is nearly there, but not quite. The property name and property values are a bit mixed up. The property name is missing in this xml response (this is schema-valid). In this case the property name should not appear and the term Service response should appear in the left-hand column of the table with the actual text of the response in the right-hand column. When both the property name and property values are present in the response, the property name should appear in the left-hand column and the value on the right. So no string "Property Value" should ever appear in the output. Could you see to this, Rob, and let us know the progress. Regards, Brian |

Sandinistas, A bioinformatics socket-service that accesses the Japanese nig dbs. http://socket.leeds.ac.uk/ddbj/consumer/operation_list.html I've tested the functionality against the client given on the home site and it matches up. A couple of new features are demonstrated here: a customised stylesheet for each operation; and <pre></pre> formatted output string so that the flat files emerge with the pre-existing format. The output from the first service using the example accession number looks purty good. The last operation is also a nifty one. The feature requests with the accession number and start stop positions return nothing from the example given, but they do that on the home site, too. The submit enable has to be sorted for pasting in data. Regards, Brian |

There are 21 services and 156 methods in XML Central of DDBJ http://xml.nig.ac.jp/wsdl/index.jsp .and they all socketize like a dream .. Good ws design - nice and simple. The home site gives a txt document for each service, which I think is an idea we could introduce. A link to a help document on each socket page with examples of usage. They just need the method names and descriptions added and job's a. (method names will come through when the latest engine is loaded) on Monday). I'll be able to use a couple on the BPS module, and we can pipe them in to the new introductory module. I tested three or four against the provider in Japan and they all work fine. I'll start shoving them on to the demo bods when the stylesheets have been done. Some files are coming back as strings that don't read particularly well, but things can be parsed/tweaked. I was posting accession numbers and other snippets into input boxes and the submit button doesn't light up until you actually go in and change something from the keyboard, so I think we should take out the disable on the submit button (but keep it on the array number of boxes button, if possible). If there is to be a disable then it ought to be linked to required fields, and we don't have that information at the moment. Rob, could you do the needful, please. I'll also start another module on cvs for the custom style sheets, take them out of the view. One suggestion for a research-into-teaching project from the teaching and learning round that just came from Rayner would be to set up BioSOCKET (?), a server/registry containing all the SOCKET consumers corresponding to public bio ws interfaces. These can then be piped straight into bods or elsewhere, customized or choreographed as required for teaching and research. Perhaps a wm job to tart up the interfaces? Just from what I've sniffed out so far, there'd be at least 60 services knocking around at the moment waiting to be done. I think once something like this is up people would develop novel ways of employing it, and it would serve as a model for other disciplines. Regards, Brian |

I've added a bit more to the web site: Getting Started and Demos and Samples. As soon as we get the complex types on the go I've got hundreds of bioinformatics WSDLs pointing at public sites that should work out of the box. Anticipating a mini-rush of customers when the JISC article is published this week, is there any possiblity of resurrecting the QMShibb stuff with another certificate, Aggie? Reet, am orff to see how Jane Tennyson's career ends. Triumph or alcoholic ignominy.... Regards, Brian |

Savrolas, The aim for this week is to release a beta 3 of the engine on Monday or Tuesday which will accommodate complex data types, test, then release a 1.0 engine on Friday along with a beta release of the console connected to juddi. We'll promote the console to 1.0 when some permanent storage for the wsdls is introduced, possibly using derby. Atif has agreed to sort out the counters for the javascript on the complex types. Atif and I will also sort out some documentation for the engine later this week. Rob - the authentication.js is still riddled with errors. The integer value regex have all got \.{0,1} inside them. Floats/doubles have \.* inside them: 1.........5 would pass. Negative values don't pass. Float will need something like: ((\+|-)?[0-9]+|[0-9]*)(\.[0-9]+)?([Ee](\+|-)?[0-9]+)? Similarly for double. It looks like all the limit = 99999999999999999999999999999 stuff is superfluous. The limit parameter doesn't seem to be used for anything at all except to be able to set it to 999999999999999999999999999999999999. If necessary take the limit parameter out of the method involved. The double and float check methods are *still* testing for byte integers. The paths to the three calendar images are not correct in the calendarblah.js file. These should be ../images not viewfactory/blah/ which disappeared years ago. Plus please document all your files, including the javascript. Finally, change "authentication.js" to "validation.js" in all the relevant files in cvs plus all the references in file. Then please test the style sheets on simple.jws and the arrays service. I shall finish off the console for a beta 1 release on Friday. Regards, Brian |

Announcing the WAFFLE Bus Project The eLearning Development Group at the University of Leeds announces the WAFFLE Bus Project, an independent follow-on from the JISC ELF Toolkit Project, SOCKET. The goal of the WAFFLE Bus Project is to produce a demonstrator, proof-of-concept implementation of a WAFFLE Bus, which is a service-oriented learning architecture resulting from the fusion of the Wide-Area Freely Federated Learning Environment (WAFFLE) and the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). The WAFFLE Bus will provide a delivery platform for JISC's e-framework and will be characterized by its flexibility, configurability and usability. The WAFFLE Bus will be able to act as a complete, enterprise, service-oriented virtual learning environment for Higher Education that facilitates collaborative, syndicated and federated approaches to teaching and learning. Alternatively, the WAFFLE Bus will offer a managed Web services gateway for existing virtual learning environments originally conceived as monolithic, non-service-oriented products. http://www.socketelf.org:8080/roller/page/wafflebus |

Socketeers, A quick heads up on adjusting the heap size for the JVM in tomcat. 1) vi /path/to/tomcat/bin/catalina.sh 2) At the top of the file, simply add some or all of the following parameters, here's an example:- JAVA_OPTS="-server -Xms1500m -Xmx1500m -XX:NewSize=400m -XX:MaxNewSize=400m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=196m -verbose:gc -XX:+PrintGCTimeStamps -XX:+PrintGCDetails -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+UseParNewGC" 3) Restart tomcat, job done. 4) To check tomcat has picked these up, do:- ps -ef | grep java cheers Rob |

Sackbuttplayers I've put a glassfish onto socket1. There's probably not much between it and JBoss in terms of supporting a demo wb, but since I've been using the predecessors of glassfish for a couple of years now, it's a quicker option. The next thing is more ports, at least 3. The management port for the server, JMS and JMX. It's not running at the moment, but it's configged for port 8080 so is usable and visible. Regards, Brian |

St Johns, I've taken roller down for the while. It's bringing Tomcat down every hour or so due to the pressure of logging all the spam referrals. I'll put a message on the web site to this effect. Perhaps if we leave it for a spell and then I can have a look at the logs and get a more comprehensive blocking list and look around for some strategies... . I have a feeling that we'll need to run it from daddy Apache - one of the its mods seems to be able to beat it. A reminder that the whole socket website is on a subversion suppository on socket3. The address is on the list. So it wouldn't be wise to edit directly on bmbsun08, since a re- build and load of eldg.war would wipe out all the changes. I've just added a socketized quickstart bods to the downloads page together with the socket2bod app source code and the samples.war. It's a question of building up bit by bit. The documentation page now has some more docs to accompany qmshibb.pdf. I've borrowed Sun's style of putting gray boxes behind the code - looks quite good. See the Quick and simple consumers with Saturn link. It's <div class="code"><pre></pre></div> and job's a... I've also put up the Javadocs for the socket-engine which looks quite impressive. At the moment Pluto only has an sh file to run on nix. Could someone produce a bat file so we can release it ac/dc? Save me buying 3 books on how to write bat files. Not in me skillset. Saturnalia, I've put a subversion 1.3.2 on socket3 working off BerkeleyDB 4.4. subversion is in /opt and the db is installed in /usr/local/. I originally tried to put this on bmbsun08 but it wasn't going to talk to berkeley without some degree of fannying around with load libs which would have taken me about a week. Pushbutton on redhat - sweet as a nut. Incidentally, loaded about 5-10 time quicker on socket3. I'm using the suppository in the first instance for our eldg/socket web site files which were lost in the attack. I'm going to add the socket javadocs and other documentation. Brian |

Without a doubt. There's nothing wrong with the links. We've been subject to increasing spam attacks in the past couple of weeks. The problem has occurred over the last 24 hours - I was on the blog OK yesterday I've been trying to pick off the main offenders using the proscribed referrers list. Today we are up at 360 hits which seems a bit odd. Anyway, I restarted the server and the response has returned to normal. Brian -----Original Message----- From: soc...@li...
