Hello Everyone, Well it's been a long time coming (a year and a half), but we are now building out the first mesh. *drum roll please* We have selected El Segundo. (Main St and Grand strip mall) A few reasons for this exist 1) The core project team works near there and as such it's easy to meet up at http://havanasandwich.com/ (almost every week night) and hack on wifi. A lot of networking/radio talent exists in the south bay and we hope to tap into that. Please feel free to drop by and hack! (Free wifi, bottomless caffeine and great sandwiches!) 2) We have a cooperative merchant (Havana Sandwich) which has installed DSL and an access point. We will be using that as the basis of the mesh. 3) There is a computer store in the strip mall we are targeting. Perhaps we can partner with them and sell net access to local residents? Please see http://socalwifi.net/index.php/Mesh_Experiment for more details. I will be fleshing that out with more detail shortly. |

Hello everyone, Many of you have asked me how to get involved with the project. Well we could really use your help with editing the wiki. I have placed a lot of content on it and could use everyones help in terms of grammar/spelling, formatting cleanup (for example there are links which still show <ahref>). Assistance with wiki cleanup is greatly appreciated! By the way if anyone wants to hack on the project, please drop by http://www.havanasandwich.com/. I am here hacking on the project 5:30 to 8:00 most Mondays to Thursdays. Thank you all for the support so far! |

All, I have moved a large portion of content from my blog onto the wiki at http://www.socalwifi.net I will be moving even more content to the wiki throughout the week. I will post here when the initial content move/upload is complete. Once all the initial data regarding the various project components is completed, I will be creating a project plan which will identify goals and objectives and allow the work to be partitioned into various pieces. Thank you to everyone for your support and feedback in this past year. -- Charles Wyble ch...@th... (818)280-7059 http://charlesnw.blogspot.com |

Hello everyone, Several people have asked me how one can get involved with the SoCalWIFI.net project. This is an excellent question. I would like to start by asking anyone interested in the project to: 1) Subscribe to the SocalWiFI mailing list. 2) Create a sourceforge account and send the ID to ch...@th... so I can add you to the sourceforge project (http://sourceforge.net/projects/socalwifi) 3) Add an entry to the project members page at http://www.socalwifi.org/index.php/Project_members with your name, under the county or counties you would like to help with a wireless deployment in. Feel free to link your name to your web page. I have added a basic content skeleton to the wiki (viewable from the main page) and will be fleshing it out shortly. Feel free to comment on it. Essentially I believe the best way to organize this project is in per county chunks. I will be putting up all the information I have gathered into the generic sections, and flesh out the LA county page. I hope others from various counties will flesh out there county pages in the same way. I think it will make a lot more sense once I have uploaded the generic and LA county information. This project is open to everyone around the world, especially the generic (IPTV/VoIP/networking) portions of the project. Obviously there are county specific things in terms of topography/government/social sensitives etc which are probably best handled by people in the local communities. -Charles -- Charles Wyble (818) 280 - 7059 http://charlesnw.blogspot.com CTO Known Element Enterprises / SoCal WiFI project |
