Peter,

Instead of trying to compile iptables yourself, have you tried
installing it from an rpm built for fedora 3?  Usually, redhat will
package everything nice and if you use their system things seem to go
together nicely

Try the command:

yum iptables

or search the Fedore 3 CDs for an iptables rpm and install it using the
rpm -Uvh iptables-(whatever the package is named).rpm command.
