hi brian,
maybe you want have a look at CRUX. 
http://www.crux.nu.

it's a small and easy to use distribution. the whole install iso is about 
200mb. there is a bsd like init process and a bsd-ports like package system 
which at least includes libnet. i had no problem getting snort_inline running 
there.
