Installed:
Sane backends 1.0.11
Snapscan e20 USB scanner
Firmware snape20.bin
Distro Mandrake 9
1.
On first time stratup of sane (using Xsane or
scanimage) scanner motor sounds as though it is trying
to drive the scanhead beyond its stop point - scanhead
does not move. After 15 sec. or so this stops, scan
head moves back and forward a few cm. then all goes quiet.
Scanimage returns: "sane_start: Error during device I/O"
Xsane cannot detect scanner.
After scanner has settled down and sane has been
restarted all is well for the rest of the session.
Xsane can be stopped and restarted without trouble and
communicates with the scanner.
2.
snapscan.config contains the line:
"No changes should be necessary below this line"
I have commented out all the details referring to
scanners 'below this line' apart from the ones for the e20.
So far (after two reboots and associated start ups of
sane) the scanner's indicator light has merely blinked
and all has been well; Xsane has no trouble
communicating with the scanner.
I'm sorry if my ignorance is missing something
incredibly basic about what is the actual problem; but
so far this does seem to offer a solution to what
sounded like a potentially destructive bug.
