Mysql comes with a minimal configuration example, that would be a good starting point. Under current Debian stable it's in /usr/share/doc/mysql-server-5.5/examples/my-small.cnf, but the chroot probably has an older version.

I'll give it a try too.

As there are some fairly new responses here I'll try to ask. Not really familiar with nix systems but got a NS-K330 up and running with SnakeOS and serving media through SMB. I'm trying to find if it's possible to install and run a MySQL server in the NAS to have it host shared XBMC library (http://kodi.wiki/view/MySQL/Setting_up_MySQL). I already have the shared library working on a Windows pc, but would like to have the small NAS do it all.

Thoughts?

Openwrt also supports these devices, but AFAIK there's no easy installation method. I've only tried it once with a ram image booted via tfpt.

From what I see there is no support for old ARM processors in squeeze or wheezey unless someone does a specific port.

Are there plans to support newer debian versions or is my trusty and much loved NAS heading for the bin?

This had by the way been a great intro to Linux a very worthwhile project despite my initial concerns..

NFS - the godfather of network file share protocols. Mac OS X supports NFS. After all, it is derived from FreeBSD
WebDAV - Mac OS X supports WebDAV. You NAS just needs to present a (preferable secure) WebDAV (webserver) service. (you can use a self-signed cert for it) The cool thing about this other OS & devices can use this too: Android, iOS, Linux, Windows. Remember, it's not really a FS, so YMMV but it may be better than Samba 3 OR netatalk and meet your needs plus support cross platform.

Another option, is to "flip" the solution. Make Mac OS X support Samba 2 again.

Check out Mac 'brew' , MacPorts?, and the old school 'Fink'. Some offer pre-built packages, others you'll have to build from source. You do not need to install the whole ginormous Xcode. Apple offers Xcode for CLI only on there Developer site. 'brew' may do it for you automagically. I don't recall.

Check them out. Even if you don't use them for to have a Samba 2 or samba 2 smbclient (static compiled) installed, they have other utils in them that are invaluable.

I'm pretty sure that the armel port will not work with SnakeOS. It's targeting EABI and armv4t. SnakeOS uses OABI and runs on armv4 cpus. So we are probably stuck with lenny.

It would still be a good idea to recreate the chroot at some point. There seems to be a lot of stuff in there that shouldn't be in a default install.
