+1 Yeah, just encountered this also. Fedora is planning on wayland being the default for plasma in F34 so more and more people are going to be encountering this. I also opened a report on rpmfusion here: https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5838

Selecting "xv" as video output in preferences -> general -> video fixes the problem.

  I tried that before I updated this ticket and just tried again on several different videos. It either doesn't play with an endless spinner, just presents a black screen or MPV crashes. Log shows this message:

      You're talking about the setting that just says X11 (slow) and has a warning about bad performance? I get a black window with no video progression (the timestamp doesn't increment). Eventually, it just crashes. Here is the log:

        Go to preferences, advanced, mplayer/mpv, and type this in the options field:
        --gpu-context=x11
        
        Then select gpu as video output, in preferences, general video.

        What type of video card are you using? I'm using:
        
        CPU: AMD FX-8350 (8) @ 2.813GHz
        GPU: AMD ATI Radeon HD 7850 / R7 265 / R9 270 1024SP
        
        with plasma-wayland 5.20.3
        
        mpv works fine by itself, and with settings as default - smplayer works fine, but just opens a separate window for video - however as you can see, when I try to tweak any of the settings to get it to play in the main window, major fail.
        
        I tried celluloid and it works fine with wayland and mpv with the default settings, everything stays in the main window as you would expect.

I tested the 21.1.0 version and when I opened a file, it didn't do anything. The file didn't play. I pressed play again and nothing happened. If you can give me some instructions on how to debug I'll be happy to try. Same results on Wayland Gnome and Wayland Plasma. Plasma-X11 appears to work fine.

This is the only issue stopping me from moving to wayland completely.

  same, I tried celluloid but its not as good.
  
  for me smplayer mostly works using --gpu-context=x11 but i think this basically means it avoids using wayland..
  
  also the screen goes to sleep, so smplayer needs a change to inhibit sleep on wayland

    I think the problem with the screensaver was already fixed. Try the development version:
