smplayer isn't honoring the filename template for screenshots anymore. I've had it set to "%F-%wH.%wM.%wS.%wT" for a long time now, but at some point it stopped working. Now it just saves the screenshots as "shot####".
Be sure to use mpv as multimedia engine (preferences -> general). That option only works with mpv.
I've run into the same problem. The format was also not respected (it was always PNG).
Would it be possible to gray out the filename template and format options if the engine isn't mpv?
