I've been having issues with the 15.09 version of SMPlayer. I don't like when I open a video a part of it it's outside the screen.
The only way to avoid it it's configuring the player to don't remember position and size and never adjust size automatically. Because when I open a video with HD resolution with the option adjust size automatically (which I like), part of the video is out of the screen and I have to drag the video each time I open one with HD resolution.
I think you should implement some fix for avoid this. In the meantime, a provisional 'fix' could be that when 'Remember position and size' is disabled, the position when the videos are opened were the top left corner of the screen (instead of the 'center' of the screen), as it was on the 14.09 version.

Find attached an example of the issue.

Mmm, I think this doesn't happen to me. If I open a 1080p video, the smplayer window takes all space it can from the desktop but it's all inside of it and the video resizes so everything is visible.

What video output are you using? (preferences -> general -> video)

Direct3d. I tried opengl but makes no difference.

I have been using smlayer for a couple of years and have experienced similar issues as moray33 in nmerous versions prior to SMPlayer 15.9.7164 beta - portable...in fact, I dont remember not having this "bug".

SmPlayer does several weid things. I have my desktop toolbar on top. Sometimes when it opens a video the bottom of the player is offscreen. The only way to make it appear is to hidr the desktop toolbar, then undie the toolbar, whereupon SmPlayer resizes itselft to fit properly on the desktop.

I download the same video from youtube in three sizes; 360p, 480p, 1080p. SmPlayer opens each one in a different size, successively larger, neither of which is automatically rendered by the player at the optimal size to aspect ratio proportion.

Even though these are files are of the same name and content, they are of different size, makng them essentially dffferent files. However, I noticed that when I dragged and dropped the files to the player while it was playing, the playback did not start over, but continued on, as if the player was only being resized.

In the development versions there's a new option to center the window when playback starts (preferences -> interface), I think this should fix the problem.

It's definitely better than how it was before. But if you check 'Center position' the player won't remember the position of the video if you have that option checked. The perfect solution for me it would be that SMPlayer centered the video only enough to show it inside the screen, not doing it always and showing it completely centered. This fix the main problem though.

In version r7178 it's not necessary to enable the "center position" option. If smplayer detects that the window is outside of the screen it will be centered.
