For some reason a I have received a comment from Josh (redxii)

"It occurs in both Linux and Windows or just Windows?"
But the comment is not there anymore.
So, as an answer: yes it occurs on both Windows and Linux as described in the Environment part of the bug report.
It's a MPlayer bug, currently it can be worked around by disabling ASS/SSA as you've done.

Hi can I work on this. Please assign this to me.
Hello,
I'm running on the same problem on windows 7 64 bit. The problem can be solved by disabling SSA subtitles, however the subtitles become ugly and there's no shadows behind the subtitle and their size can't be changed.
I noticed that I don't face this problem when I use UMPlayer (which is basically based on an old version of SMPlayer. I'm no developer, but I think if someone digs on UMPlayer source code, he can find out the source of the problem.
I think it's a problem of mplayer. I suggest to try the package with mplayer2, I tested with some arabic subtitles and I think it doesn't have this problem.

I don't face that problem on smplayer 0.8.5 on ubuntu 13.04 64 bits
Go to Preferences then Advanced then select Options for Mplayer Tab and enter this on Options: -noflip-hebrew
Now (r5938) smplayer uses the option -noflip-hebrew when using -ass, so the problem should be fixed.
