#109 File information loading should be non-blocking

Everytime I load a new file and SMPlayer is gathering information on the file, the audio and video stops, I can't pause, stop, raise the volume or even change the player position. And many times while it is doing it, it simply stops the player (and usually freezes the computer). It sucks when I'm listening to an audiobook or a complete album or a mixtape or a set. It completely breaks the mood.

This process should be non-blocking. I wouldn't mind not having the information while it is loading, if it didn't blocked the player.

Sorry but I don't know what you mean. When a new file is loaded, of course the previous file is stopped, I don't see a reason to keep it playing.

Also opening a new file is very fast, almost instantaneous. If it's not for you then you have another problem.

BTW, you didn't say the version of smplayer, or even the OS you're using.

    The situation is:

    I'm listening to a playlist.

It goes from file1 to file2. It goes from file1 to file2. No problem about that.

But when file2 is loading, there's a big delay between both which takes a lot to start playing file2. And when it does start to play it takes a lot longer to go back to normal, in which the following things occur:

    - The file information (name, duration) doesn't appear. Probably this file information gathering is what is rendering SMPlayer unusable.

    - SMPlayer windows virtually freeze.

    - It doesn't let you use the buttons or controls. It can't be paused, stopped, next'ed, raise or low the volume, etc.

    - It plays at full volume which can be quite disturbing sometimes.

    Suggestion:
    - SMPlayer could use a buffer to pre-load file2 when playing file1 so this delay doesn't happen or is minimized.

    - It could start mplayer with the correct volume in the command line.

    Environment
    Version: 0.6.0rc2+SVN-r847
    Compiled with Qt 4.3.2
    Using MPlayer SVN r24722

AMD Sempron 1600 with 512Mb of RAM.

Anyway take a look at that thread in the forum, as your problem seems similar to the one described there.
