Thanks for the comments. Two non-technical responses: Having used both the grouped and alphabetic organization of the man pages intensively in hardcopy, I find it much easier to find things in the alphabetic version. This corresponds to the general experience people had with the BSD 4.2 manuals, where the library man pages where grouped by area (generic C library, stdio, math, Fortran, etc.) This was frustrating enough that the 4.3 manuals went back to alphabetic. I'm willing to concede that the hierarchic organization may be better for the on-line pages. I am now on the sml-implementers list, so a CC: to me separately is unnecessary. Emden |
