I've got a 3ware 9750 8i with the latest firmware. I'm trying to use
smartmontools 5.40-1ubuntu1 (built from a PPA) under Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid
running a 2.6.32-26-server kernel with the 3w-sas driver built as a module
I get this when I run smartctl on my SAS drives (2 x ST3300656SS and 3 x
> smartctl -d 3ware,0 -a -T permissive /dev/twl0
Smartctl: Device Read Identity Failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device)
My experience with using smartmontools with SAS drives is limited.
The man page suggest that only works for SATA drives but says nothing about
how SAS monitoring might be accomplished.
I would really like to monitor these drives and be able to run smart tests
on the drives.
Will it ever be possible to do what I want?
i.e. do SAS drives simply not support smart functions?
Is there some syntax I can use which will get me the health of the
individual drives in my raid and allow me to run offline tests and see the
The closest I've gotten is getting health reports on the resulting raided
> smartctl -a -T permissive /dev/sda
