Hello, i am getting some errors after running smartctl on a Maxtor hard drive. I am also wondering what does this remaining field mean? It has values of 60%. Attribute 5 says that there are 3 reallocated sectors. So it means that there were 3 bad sectors, which were reallocated? But they were not noticed in the earlier runs from smartctl. My last question ist about the attributes 196, 197 and 198. I see that there is 1 reallocated sector. But what was reallocated if there is 1 uncorrectable error? At the end of the email is the result of smartctl -a /dev/hdd. thx for your answers! See http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/BadBlockHowTo.txt for some hints about how to track down the file at that unreadable sector, and how to force the sector to reallocate. Cheers, Bruce |

I've had the opportunity to work with a Maxtor engineer on drive issues recently. From that, can I clarify some things below: Bruce Allen wrote: >> 5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 253 253 063 Pre-fail >>Always - 3 > > > 3 sectors have been reallocated. Raw attribute 5 is the length of the drive's Grown defect list (GLIST). It includes actual remaps and "probational" sectors--those that the drive has marked unreadable which will be fixed (either rewritten in place or remapped (AKA reallocated) and written at a new location on the media) on the next write to that sector. From that info and the info in raw attrib. 197, I would say that 2 sectors have been reallocated and 1 is probational. >>197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0008 252 252 000 Old_age >>Offline - 1 > > > There is currently one unreadable sector ...that the drive knows about. I know this is probably obvious but the drive can only mark a sector probational if it has tried to read it and failed. BR |

Hi Brett, Thanks a lot for this note -- this is very useful information. I didn't realize that the reallocated sector count included both actual remaps and 'probational' ones that have not yet been carried out.
