You could ask anyway. The disk shouldn't have so many bad sectors, and
they must have been building up over time.

I don't think it would explain this. If the OS tries to reference a
non-existent block, this just gives and IDNF (Id Not Found) error. It
doesn't cause a sector reallocation.
