Our group has a number of similar disks (Diamond Max 80 GB, model Maxtor 98196H8). I've added our smartctl -a output to the web page, see the last entry at http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/#sampleoutput so you can compare it. Our Maxtor disk has the same 'data structure revision number' (16) as your disk. Unfortunately, I don't know what many of these attributes are -- if you could identify them by name I'd be happy to add them into smartmontools. Some of the attributes on your disk clearly have values that look wrong, eg 138006 power-on hours (~15 years!) can't be correct. Unfortunately there's nothing much that can be done about this without some help from Maxtor. The problem is that ALL of these attributes are "vendor specific" and the vendor's don't typically tell us what they are -- we have to guess. Anyway, if you can get Maxtor to identify the unknown attributes (and the ones that have ridiculous values) it would be nice.... tell me and I will add them into smartmontools. > Also, is the HD's temperature listed anywhere herE? i'd like to know. If it can monitor the HD's temperature, send a note to the mailing list and I will try and understand their method/algorithm and add it in... If so, you should use the "-m" option to smartctl; the power on lifetime is stored in minutes not hours. > SMART Self-test log, version number 1 > No self-tests have been logged I would definitely run some disk self-tests.
