After discovering an apparent error message when running smartctl on a newly installed drive I searched the list's archives and found that this error... "Warning! SMART Selective Self-Test Log Structure error: invalid SMART checksum" ...is quite pervasive on Hitachi SATA drives. In this case, the Hitachi drives are HDS725050KLA360 500Gbyte and the error is displayed on all three newly installed drives. I'm quite certain that it's nothing to worry about relative to drive health and smartmontools operation but was wondering if the log's structure is truly invalid of if it's a matter of how smartmontools is interpreting a particular value. Please let me know if I can provide any information that might help track down this anomaly. Thank you. |

Could you send a note to Hitachi support about this? I suspect a bug in their drive firmware is responsible. Yes, sir. Will do... again! I sent a note to them the same day that I posted about it here. Still haven't heard back from them. BTW, it doesn't seem to hamper smartmontools' operation. It's just 'ugly' :-) Thanks for the reply. On Jul 24, 2006, at 3:47 PM, Bruce Allen wrote: > Could you send a note to Hitachi support about this? As I live and breath! I actually received a reply from Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and they acknowledge the error. Here's their reply: ============ After reviewing the situation we found that the drive is incorrectly reporting the checksum value for the Selective self-test Log. The 7K500 is incorrectly reporting that it does support the Selective self-test, which it does not. At this time we do not plan on implementing that feature in the 7K500. In our future products it will be supported. The Deskstar 7K160 and T7K500 already properly support the Selective self-test. In our specification for the Read Log Ext (2Fh) it does not show that the 09h Selective self-test is supported; but in the S.M.A.R.T Read Log Sector (subcommand D5h) it does state the Selective self-test. Here is a link to the specification for the 7K500: http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/ 23C0172024F978ED86257026007B33ED I apologize for the inconvenience and thank you again for bringing this to our attention. Best regards, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies ============= I'd say that falls under the category of good, honest customer service and goes a long way toward making a life-long customer. Bruce: Thanks for your part in us getting this good information to Hitachi. Now I'll just have to learn to ignore the "ugly" error :-) B. Bruce, OK that clarifies things. You *might* be able to avoid this ugly error if you replace (for example) smartctl -a /dev/hda with smartctl -H -i -l selftest -l error ... /dev/hda In other words, replace the 'all' flag '-a' with the list of specific equivalent flags, but NOT including '-l selective'.
