Hi, I have a disk which I'm a little worried about. Its a Samsung HD753LJ 750GB connected to a PCI SiI 3512. I have four questions about the results I have been getting from smartctl: 1) Why am I getting a FAILING_NOW for an unknown attribute? What are these attributes and is there anyway to resolve them? Is there a source for documentation of the unknown_attributes found on this line of Samsung drives. Is this attribute that reports failure important? 2) I began a captive extended self test which is in the state of "Completed: handling damage??". Is there any way I can find out what the drive is doing and conduct further extensive self tests? 3) The drive appears to be operating normal; Can somebody give me an idea as to weather this drive is likely to soon fail or corrupt its contents? 4) The -F samsung/2 options don't appear to change the output from smartctl. Do I need to use either of these options? Hi David, It appears that Samsung is not using the SMART Attributes in an ATA-3 consistent way, since the SMART Health Status is 'pass'. So perhaps this unknown Attribute is an experimental one that they are trying out, but it's not factored into the SMART Health Status. However the failing self-tests are a concern. What happens if you run a self-test NOT in background mode?
