I've found the bad-block howto (
http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/badblockhowto.html ) incredibly
useful over the years. However, recently I've had problems using "dd"
to overwrite the bad sector. It seems Linux often wants to write full
4KB and won't let me overwrite a single 512 sector, and gives me a read
error (while trying to write).
(I'm aware of newer drives using 4kb blocks, but I don't think this is
the case because the drive itself reports an address which is not on a
Anyway, I found that
hdparm --write-sector $LBA_ADDRESS $device
works nicely. It's a relatively new option to hdparm, but seems
preferrable to dd if a person has it available.
I was wondering if someone could update the howto to include a mention
of this method.
