Hi, I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000528AS and I was experiencing some timeout using the FreeBSD ahci driver while connected to a SATA2 controller. When this was happening the drive become unusable until the next reboot (maybe because on that controller the ahci driver doesn't handle gracefully the problem that I'm going to describe? But that's another story). So I've connected the drive to a different, controller (SATA1) on the same pc as I had to copy about 200 gb of files, from the 1st out of 4 partitions, to a USB backup drive. The copy was taking a lot of time, but in my mind the cause was the USB interface of the destination drive. Then I noticed that the speed was far below the limit of the USB interface: the average was 4 mb/s. Doing some tests using gstat ( http://goo.gl/HiIRI ), I noticed that the USB drive seems ok, but the ST31000528AS read some file at 120 mb/s avrg., some other slower and some at just 4 mb/s which looks lousy for sata, even if not sata2. It seems that the first files on the partition are read fast, then suddenly the speed drop, which should be "normal" but I think not it that terms. Recently I did some test with smartctl, but I thought they were ok. Anyway I noticed that some values like "Seek_Error_Rate", "Head_Flying_Hours", "Raw_Read_Error_Rate" and "Hardware_ECC_Recovered" are significantly changing while reading the files (the first twos increasing, the others decreasing) but I don't understand them and I don't know if it's normal. I did also a short test with SeaTools for DOS which reported no problem. Below and at http://pastebin.com/tP1isD5u you will find smartctl details about the device. Doing some searches I've found some scaring thing about that drive like this http://goo.gl/1j99D, but I don't know if they are true or are just to terrify people and get some customer. Any idea of what's going on and about the cause of the speed dropping? Do you think that the HD is "silently" dying?
