Hello, I have one seagate sata 250GB drive which developed some offline uncorrectable sectors. I have zeroed the disk through seagate dos utility, and have dome long test also, but the log and smart error remain same even when long test completed without errors. Kindly help. You have quite a few re-allocated sectors there already, may want to backup any files on it if you don't have them backed up already. Justin. |

I had zeroed the drive before also but with bs=512. The process could not be completed due to power failure. This time I did as you suggested and checked inbetween with sending kill -USR1 to the dd process. It took 4 hours 19 minutes to complete. After that I did offline and long test as you can see from the difference from the prev report and the latest one attached underneath. It completed without errors. But smartctl is still reporting 24 pending sectors. It seems the pending uncorrectable sectors have become fixated. It looks to me as if this disk does not clear the pending sector counts. But the fact that you have a clean self-test and that the last reported read error was some days ago both seem to indicate the disk is 'OK to use' at least for now. Keep an eye on it! Agree, use it but make sure you keep backups regularly incase it decides to die--or RMA it. Since smartd fills my inbox with 24 uncorrectable messages intermittantly which I wanted to avoid. I will install the oses on this drive and data backups on other disk or maybe keep /home and windows backups in some ntfs partition on the other drive. Thanks for the advice and input to both of you.
