Hello smartmontools people: The two WD1200BB drives I've tested appear to have several reporting discrepancies: 1. The lifetime hours from the self-test log don't correspond to attibute 9, power_on hours 2. The historical lifetime hours from the self-test log don't just increment, but appear to decrement as well. 3. There appears to be not reporting of error rates, such as raw_read_error_rate (attribute 1), seek_error_rate (attribute 7), both of which are zero on both drives. I've also tested a WD1200JB drive, and it has problems 1. and 3. above, but not 2 (the hours do increase monotonically). Posted below is an example output just after a short test. Bruce: Yes, that's it. In my search for prior info on this problem, I didn't = locate this FAQ, for some reason. I did the calculation on this problem, and it foots exactly. So thank = you for pointing out the solution. The problem with the apparent failure to report raw read and seek = errors/error rate still remains, however (item 3 below). I've still = been unable to find anything on this problem. The two WD examples you = have on the Home Page may confirm this as normal behavior for the seek = error rate, but doesn't look like it for the read error rate.
