We have these new seagate disks but the smartctl -a does not provide the regular attributes. How does this affect the workings of the smartmon demon? It looks like its only going to warn us when a self test or temperature fails See the output of smartctl -a below. smartctl 6.5 2016-01-24 r4214 [x86_64-linux-4.4.0-34-generic] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-16, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Vendor: SEAGATE Product: ST8000NM0075 Revision: E002 Compliance: SPC-4 User Capacity: 8,001,563,222,016 bytes [8.00 TB] Logical block size: 512 bytes Physical block size: 4096 bytes LB provisioning type: unreported, LBPME=0, LBPRZ=0 Rotation Rate: 7200 rpm Form Factor: 3.5 inches Logical Unit id: 0x5000c50085729b37 Serial number: ZA122VH10000R643Y5QL Device type: disk Transport protocol: SAS (SPL-3) Local Time is: Mon Sep 19 14:20:22 2016 CEST SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. No. If possible, please try whether the problem persists if an affected disks is connected to another machine or via another interface (USB, SATA) to same machine. Here is a recent report about a similar problem with an external USB/eSATA case: https://www.smartmontools.org/ticket/719 Thanks, Christian |

I've got here three 4 TB HGST HUS724040ALA640 drives. They are mounted in ICY Box external cases, connected via e-SATA, LUKS-encrypted. They are used once a week for offline backups and perform fine for years now. Just today I've noticed that all three of them seem to have invalid SMART data like below. I'm quite sure that they were normally readable at beginning. What might have happened? Surely SMART data is not encrypted by LUKS? Is there a way to repair/rewrite the SMART data so that they at least start over fresh? $ sudo smartctl -iA /dev/sdg smartctl 6.5 2016-01-24 r4214 [x86_64-linux-3.16.0-4-amd64] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-16, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Family: Hitachi/HGST Ultrastar 7K4000 Device Model: HGST HUS724040ALA640 Serial Number: PN2331PAH3ZBRT LU WWN Device Id: 5 000cca 22bcfe6a7 Firmware Version: MFAOAA70 User Capacity: 4.000.787.030.016 bytes [4,00 TB] Sector Size: 512 bytes logical/physical Rotation Rate: 7200 rpm Form Factor: 3.5 inches Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: ATA8-ACS T13/1699-D revision 4 SATA Version is: SATA 3.0, 6.0 Gb/s (current: 3.0 Gb/s) Local Time is: Mon Aug 29 14:01:14 2016 CEST SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability. hi all, There is an issue with auto mode for smartctl tool what it's dealing with Adaptec 6805 controller and SATA drive connected. however, as soon as i set proper mode it's working fine. the test below has been run on FreeBSD 10.3.0.3 - Pilingitam (revision 2898). is it going to be fixed by chance? During an offline test, the progress is reported by the above "Self-test execution status" in 10% steps. The smartd daemon logs this info if -l selfteststs is enabled. Do not use --captive. Be aware that the USB bridge may abort the test if the drive is not accessed frequently, see: https://www.smartmontools.org/wiki/FAQ#Whyarelongself-testskeepgettinginterrupted Thanks, Christian |

The captive test has already finished if the ATA command returns and smartctl prints "Drive command ... successful". The remaining output lines are misleading if --captive is used. Note that captive tests are not recommended (see smartctl man page). Very long captive tests may not work at all because the ATA driver aborts with timeout. Thanks, Christian |

Hi all, I ran the captive short self-test and it shows up as - # smartctl --captive -t short /dev/sdb smartctl 6.6 2016-05-31 r4324 [x86_64-linux-4.6.0-1-amd64] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-16, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF OFFLINE IMMEDIATE AND SELF-TEST SECTION === Sending command: "Execute SMART Short self-test routine immediately in captive mode". Test will complete after Sat Aug 13 18:07:24 2016 Now should I wait for 5 minutes or something to know if the test is completed ? If you can blank the entire drive and it doesn't change, I don't think you're going to convince it to change. You'd probably want some filter that whitelisted this value and notified if it changed, rather than notifying on strictly nonzero. - Rich On Tue, Aug 9, 2016 at 7:32 AM, Alexandre Cuenca <al...@cu...> wrote: > Hello, > > I have some "current pending sector" probably due to a samsung firmware > bug : > https://www.smartmontools.org/wiki/SamsungF4EGBadBlocks > I just patched my HDD firmware but I still have current pending sectors : > >197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always > - 2 > >198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 100 100 000 Old_age Offline > - 1 > > I think these are actually good sectors because I can read with hdparm any > sector that triggered IO error in syslog ; badblocks (read) doesn't report > any > issues and "smartctl -t long" is also successful > > My question is : which is the best way to fix my drive with smartmontools > now? > Primary goal would be to stop receiving daily mails for these sectors, > ultimate goal would be to fix smart erroneous data > > Thanks in advance > > -- > Alexandre CUENCA > Jabber : ale...@bl... > PGPKey : 0x29A9820A > > ------------------------------------------------------------ > ------------------ > What NetFlow Analyzer can do for you? Hello, I have some "current pending sector" probably due to a samsung firmware bug : https://www.smartmontools.org/wiki/SamsungF4EGBadBlocks I just patched my HDD firmware but I still have current pending sectors : >197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2 >198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0030 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 1 I think these are actually good sectors because I can read with hdparm any sector that triggered IO error in syslog ; badblocks (read) doesn't report any issues and "smartctl -t long" is also successful My question is : which is the best way to fix my drive with smartmontools now? Primary goal would be to stop receiving daily mails for these sectors, ultimate goal would be to fix smart erroneous data Thanks in advance -- Alexandre CUENCA Jabber : ale...@bl... Hi! With my new LaCie P9223 1TB USB 3.0 attached smartctl shows: > # smartctl -a /dev/sdh > smartctl 6.5 2016-05-07 r4318 [x86_64-linux-4.6.4-301.fc24.x86_64] (local build) > Copyright (C) 2002-16, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org > > /dev/sdh: Unknown USB bridge [0x059f:0x1070 (0x001)] > Please specify device type with the -d option. According to a google search it contains a ASMedia 1053 controller. -d sat works fine. Would be nice to have it included in future versions of smartmontools. I second that. I have a number of machines with megaraid controllers. I just put an alias (actually, a bunch of scripts) in /opt/megaraid and then add it to the path ahead of smartctl. I must admit it's a nuisance, tho, but that's the tradeoff for getting so many devices on one motherboard. ;-) Cheers, Tudor. Hi, I am running smartd - q check to test my Hard drives . During the test for some of the drives I am hitting the following error . And the test becomes very slow. Does this mean the drive is bad ? Should I stop shipping these drives. Bad IEC (SMART) mode page, err=%d, skip device Regards, Shaiju |

It means that the device does not support the SCSI IEC mode page. Smartctl then assumes a badly conforming device and aborts further processing. Virtual disks of VMware or VirtualBox emulate the IEC page and smartctl prints a sane (but useless) result. Regards, Christian |

This only works if DEVICESCAN is used. It includes also drives behind MegaRAID controllers (but no other RAID controllers). For individual entries, -d megaraid,N is still required. > Is there any > way to get smartctl to do the same? "smartctl --scan" uses the same functionality as the DEVICESCAN in smartd.conf.
