[smartmontools-support] selftest reports error count increased, but error log empty

I am running smart 5.30 on SLES9 Linux. The /var/log/warn file has a message showing the error count increased, and this corresponds to a selftest terminated due to errors (in the selftest log). However, the SMART error log is empty. Is this a known problem? I have not had any success searching the mailing list archives, sourceforge changelog, or googling. Any help would be appreciated.
