I spoke too soon. Here's what has happened after 5:44 pm:

Aug 12 21:06:18 asylum smartd[572]: Device: /dev/hdc, SMART Usage Attribute: 9 Power_On_Hours changed from 254 to 253
Aug 13 05:41:32 asylum smartd[572]: Device: /dev/hdc, SMART Usage Attribute: 9 Power_On_Hours changed from 253 to 252

Apparently, at approx. 5:40 pm on 8/11 it would have gone to 0 (but did not), then 
rolled over and at approx. 2:40 am on 8/12 it would have gone to 255 (but did not),
then at approx. 11:40 am it went to 254 (unreported, obviously, as increasing
normalized value is a good thing), then started counting down again.

  9 Power_On_Hours          0x0012   252   001   000    Old_age   Always       -       914

What a lovely person wrote the SMART firmware for this drive!
