[Smartmontools-support]self-test without error-logging?

Hello!

I'm quiet new to this. I've got in my Server one SCSI-disk and one old
IDE-disk which doesn't support error-logging. How can I test my drives and
see if the test reports logging? "smartctl -t short -C /dev/hda" just goes
to background and reports nothing, the same with /dev/sda
