Ummm, I think so, but haven't done it myself. Here's what I would do -- others in the group would perhaps do it differently. I would get the Cool-linux bootable CD image from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/emergencycd2/ Mount the .iso image using a loopback device and install smartmontools into the image (copy smartctl and the man pages -- I don't think anything else would be useful). Then burn the .iso onto a CD. This would give you a standalone bootable CD that you could use to examine disks on a system even if the disks were so trashed that you couldn't boot from them.
