Just to follow through.... The key thing here is to IGNORE the huge numbers like: 18446744073709551615 =3D 2^64-1 They are "un-normalized" raw values. In fact in hexidecimal notation the number above is: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF which just corresponds to "all bits set". I think I might modify smartctl to not print this value... let me think abou it. The thing to look at is the three numbers: 162 162 000 The first is the actual Attribute value (162) The second is the lowest (worst) value ever recorded (162) The third is the "fail" threshold (0). So if the first number drops to zero, this means that a Usage (old-age) attribute is failing. If the second number drops to zero, this means that it has failed in the past.
