If smartctl actually works without a -d option then 174c:55aa is likely 
not the ID of the USB bridge because it is not in the drive database 
(try "smartctl -P showall 0x174c:0x55aa"). Some USB devices have with 
several IDs, one for each function (USB->SATA bridge, USB hub, ...).

"smartctl -r scsiioctl,2 -d test /dev/ice" should print the ID used for 
auto-detection.
