In another thread titled "Another smartctl -T permissive required
question." a few days back, I posted a very similar error message,
this external drive works fine over USB, but requires -T permissive
over firewire, and gives the following error message:

I'm curious for more information about this problem... is this
something that can be fixed?  Is the kernel at fault here?
